JUST PUBLISHED: Countering Threats to Correctional Institution Security (RAND 2019).

In addition to violence, contraband, and compromised staff members, correctional institutions are facing newer security threats like computer hacks, synthetic drugs, cell phones, and drones. An expert workshop identified high-priority needs for countering these threats.

JUST PUBLISHED ... Caring for Those in Custody: Identifying High-Priority Needs to Reduce Mortality in Correctional Facilities (RAND 2017)

Inmates disproportionately suffer from a variety of health conditions, compared with the general population. Some in-custody deaths are inevitable; for example, elderly inmates may die of old age. But certain types of death are highly preventable.

Experts agree that the main role of the U.S. corrections sector should be to help improve offenders' behavior. Better staff training, the elimination of operations that generate revenue, and a cultural shift to prioritize rehabilitation over punishment could help.
