I have been encountering a lot of washer off-balance calls lately. Even in the "good, old days" parts wore out and needed replacement. Sadly, today many parts are inadequate to begin with and cause problems far too soon.

If your washer frequently runs off-balance it may be that the problem is not repairable. Before spending hard-earned money on a service call, try running smaller loads. If your machine stays in-balance it might mean your machine is functioning as best it can.

Major appliances today are front-and-center in the disposable product line. Hang-on to "old reliable". Even a diminished older appliance is preferable to any of the new stuff.

Horror stories are available upon request.

Here is something only the most diligent of cleaners might be able to avoid. Although issues with the surface burners on a gas range are not a big problem, the most common of them usually involve the electric spark ignitors.

Sparking but not lighting may not happen often but it is most often due to dirt clogging one or more of the ignition holes in the burner housing. The dirt isn't always, in fact usually isn't, spilled food or grease. Although gas flame is pretty clean there is a small amount soot which can accumulate in the holes of a burner housing. It may be a little more obvious when the burner only partially lights but failure to light at all is likely the two or three holes that direct gas to the spark.

I usually carry a couple larger sewing needles and they will clean out the holes. If you have some grease build-up on your burners soaking them for awhile can soften up the build-up and lengthen the time before you have to do it again.

If you never have this problem, congratulations! You are truly a remarkable person!

Just a little counter-PC common sense: in my area the local power company offers to pick-up and "recycle" your old refrigerator for free. Sounds good. That old, inefficient fridge in your garage needs to go. There is just one problem.

After multiple decades of doing business in the lower-income neighborhoods of my area, working, low cost appliances are a crucial need. Not everyone can afford a new, high efficiency appliance. It is either good, used stuff or $20/week at Rent-A-Center.

Don't let the power company destroy your older, working appliances. Donate them to charity or sell them to used dealers. You will be doing a greater good!

Another temperature related tip: most ice-makers will not operate above 15°F. If your ice-maker has stopped making ice it may not be a problem with the ice-maker itself. Check the temp in your freezer. It may be too warm.

Occasionally, when I encounter something new, I will look for a blog or Youtube video about the new appliance. They can be very helpful but there is enough variation especially among the new, high tech stuff that the internet advice is often only generally applicable.

Most problems cannot be specifically identified without an experienced person ideally armed with some technical information. Many problems are routine but even then prior experience can make all the difference.

With warmer weather your refrigerator may begin to struggle. Freezer sections should run around 0°F. If you are getting above 10°, you may have a problem. Food sections should hold around 40°. Upper 30s is best but, again, above 45° is an indication of impending trouble. A refrigerator thermometer is worth the $5 investment!

A dryer runs but doesn't heat is a very common problem. Most of the time it is a an inexpensive fix. It is worth having a professional look at it.

This should go without saying but if your appliance starts making an odd noise it isn't going to go away. It is going to get worse and, as a result, so is the damage. Have someone who knows what they are doing look at it. It won't be free but it will be cheaper!
