There are few things more rewarding in the K-9 world than watching a dog you helped raise go on to succeed at the highest levels.
This past week, Sgt. Spates and K-9 Storm competed at the United States Police Canine Association National Detector Dog Trials against 178 of the finest police dogs and handlers from across the country — and finished an incredible 6th place nationally. What an accomplishment.
What makes it especially meaningful to me is that I delivered Storm from her mother when she was born, raised her and her sister Scarlet for the first two years of their lives, and did Storm’s foundational obedience and early training before eventually handing her over to Sgt. Spates. I’ll admit, I did that a little reluctantly… but only because I knew she was exactly the kind of handler a special dog like Storm deserved.
Watching this team grow into what they are today has been something special. Their hard work, dedication, and partnership earned this accomplishment.
Retirement has a funny way of reminding you that the work continues long after you step away. Seeing dogs and handlers you helped mentor continue succeeding out there is a pretty good feeling.
Congratulations to Sgt. Spates and Storm. You both made a lot of people proud.
