Jonathan and the Landworks Landscapes crew will use native plants in our landscaping designs if the opportunity arises. We particularly like native grasses like Muhly Grass or Mexican Feather Grass. We’ve found them to be low maintenance and intriguing in a breeze.

Muhly Grass is particularly attractive in the fall when it turns a nice pink plume. It’s a unique feature for landscapes and very hardy in our climate. The maintenance on it is also very minimal. Our team only trims the grass back one time in February which is why we recommend it often.

What are the benefits of a French drain over a catch basin?

A French drain can be particularly helpful for drying out saturated soil, as the trench is generally about a foot deep in the ground. If you only use a catch basin to solve your drainage problems, it will primarily collect surface water.

For instance, after 3 to 4 inches of rain like we often get here in East Texas, it may drain off the surface water, but if it's winter and cold, the ground won't dry out at all - meaning that soggy soil isn't going to improve with just a catch basin. A catch basin might collect surface water quicker than a French drain would for that purpose, but a French drain features a system a foot below the surface, allowing the soil to dry out as water seeks the path of least resistance. It enters the French drain system and drains out that way.

The type of materials used on a drainage job matter, and Landworks Landscapes uses top-quality product to deliver a top-quality result. We ship in pipe by the truckload that’s been specially designed by a Michigan-based drainage expert. It’s a type of corrugated pipe that’s stronger than the typical black, corrugated pipe you’ll find in big box stores but easy enough to work with that it cuts down on our overall labor costs.

For our French drain systems, we use a fabric that’s appropriate for our system as well as clean drain rock to avoid added dirt. We also have specialty waterproof tape to seal our pipe joints. That tape helps keep the joints water-tite and last for many years to come.
