Well, actually… a LOT out of the box.

We’ve picked up so many quality antiques, unusual treasures, and downright interesting smalls this month that we’ve decided to give October a little extra room to breathe!

𝗢𝘂𝗿 𝗢𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝗚𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝗔𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗶𝘀 𝗻𝗼𝘄 𝗰𝗹𝗼𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗡𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝟭𝟮𝘁𝗵!

🎃 The catalog for the Nov. 12th Online Only OBX Local Consignment Gallery Auction will start heading online closer to Halloween, and trust us… there’s plenty worth unwrapping.

For now, we’re still opening boxes, sorting through collections, and occasionally stopping to ask, “What in the world is THAT?”

That’s half the fun around here.

👀 Take a peek. 𝗔𝗻𝘆𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗰𝗵 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗲𝘆𝗲?

🔎 𝗔 𝗠𝗬𝗦𝗧𝗘𝗥𝗬 𝗙𝗥𝗢𝗠 𝗔𝗡 𝗢𝗨𝗧𝗘𝗥 𝗕𝗔𝗡𝗞𝗦 𝗔𝗧𝗧𝗜𝗖…

Sometimes the most interesting discoveries aren’t necessarily the most valuable. They’re the ones that leave us with questions.

During a recent estate pickup, we uncovered an old wooden box among a collection of items associated with the U.S. Life-Saving Service and Coast Guard.

The box, along with several other interesting artifacts, offers a fascinating glimpse into the Outer Banks’ maritime past.

But we’re still piecing together its history.

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘄𝗮𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗯𝗼𝘅 𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝘂𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗳𝗼𝗿?

Was it for personal belongings? Equipment? Something else entirely?

That’s the fun of exploring old estates. Every attic has a story, and sometimes the smallest discoveries lead to the biggest questions.

We’d love to hear your thoughts!

🏚️🔦 COME PICK AN OUTER BANKS ESTATE WITH US!

There’s something about climbing into an attic and wondering what’s been hiding up there for the last 50, 75, or even 100 years.

Every box, every dusty corner, every forgotten piece has the potential to tell a story. And sometimes, the things that look like nothing turn out to be the most interesting finds of all!

This is one of my favorite parts of the auction business. Getting into places most people never see, uncovering things that haven’t seen daylight in decades, and giving those forgotten treasures a chance at a new home.

👀 NOW HERE’S THE QUESTION…

Did you spot anything we should have taken a closer look at? What would YOU have grabbed first?

🔨 Spoiler alert: It’s all heading to auction at Island Auction Company, so you might just get your chance!

🏚️ Somewhere in this attic, Outer Banks history has been hiding for decades…

This is exactly why we love what we do.

Every dusty box, old tool, and forgotten piece of the past makes us wonder who used it, what it meant to them, and what stories it could tell if it could talk.

Here on the Outer Banks, our history is woven into the homes, families and lives that built this place. Sometimes, pieces of that history are still sitting quietly in attics, barns, garages, and storage spaces, waiting to be rediscovered.

If you have items that you’re curious about re-homing or things that have been tucked away for decades, we’re always happy to offer some insight when the opportunity arises. We have close relationships with local museums, preservationists and the Outer Banks History Center in order to assure that certain historical Outer Banks items have the opportunity to make their way to the proper collections for future preservation.

You may be surprised by the stories—and sometimes the value—hidden in the things you’ve held onto over the years.

Sometimes, the best part of our job isn’t finding something valuable. It’s finding something meaningful that might otherwise be forgotten and finding that item the perfect home where it can be appreciated for both its aesthetic & historical value.

🦢 Another day. Another house. Another flock of swans…. and a mini goose!

Estate pickups are full of surprises, and you never know what’s waiting around the next corner! This house was full of local decoys. This small flock is signed by Wallace O’Neal IV and Nick Sapone.

For those who appreciate waterfowling history, decoys, and the stories behind the things people collect, this is just another glimpse into life at Island Auction Company.

These are the kinds of discoveries that make every estate different. 🏡🔎

📚❤️ A little trip back to school on Roanoke Island…

Before smartphones, selfies, and social media, there were school picture days, handwritten notes, and yearbooks filled with the faces of friends you’d remember for a lifetime.

These 1950s yearbooks offer a little glimpse into everyday life on Roanoke Island nearly 70 years ago. The hairstyles, the fashions, the familiar names, and the faces of people who helped make this community what it is today.

For some, these pages bring back memories of their own school days. For others, they offer a chance to see parents, grandparents, or even themselves as young students.

And that’s the special thing about local history — sometimes the most ordinary things turn out to be the most meaningful. ❤️

Did you go to school on Roanoke Island, or do you recognize anyone in these yearbooks? We’d love to hear your stories! 👇

Back in the day, Hulcam Farm Dairy in Manteo, North Carolina, had a rather unusual approach to keeping its cows happy. 🐄🎵

According to this old newspaper clipping, dairy owner Z. V. Brinkley installed a radio in his milking barn and discovered that playing good music seemed to make a noticeable difference in milk production!

Imagine walking into a dairy barn and hearing music playing while the cows were being milked. Was it the music, a calmer atmosphere, or a little of both? Either way, it’s a fascinating little piece of local history!

We love finding these glimpses into everyday life on the Outer Banks decades ago. Sometimes the most interesting history isn’t about famous people or major events—it’s about the clever, unusual, and downright surprising things our neighbors were doing.

🎶🐄 What do you think? Did the cows have a favorite station? 😂

💀🦆 OUR FAVORITE SKELETON OF THE SEASON!

We’ve seen some interesting things come out of Outer Banks attics lately, but this bare bones beauty might just steal the show! 😂

Found tucked away in a Roanoke Island attic, this old canvas-covered decoy has lost its outer skin, leaving behind its fascinating wire-frame “skeleton.” 🦆💀

What was once a working decoy is now a rare peek at the construction hiding beneath the surface.

But here’s what has us curious… WHO MADE IT? 🤔

Was this the work of a local waterman making his own decoys, or could it have come from a maker whose name has been lost to time? With the canvas gone, we’re left with plenty of clues about its construction, but the maker remains a mystery!

👀 Have you ever seen a decoy built like this, or recognize this style of construction? We’d love to hear your theories!

Around here, even the skeletons have stories to tell! 🦆

🔎 MYSTERY SOLVED? A POSSIBLE CONNECTION TO THE WWII “SAND POUNDERS”! 🇺🇸🐴

Yesterday, we asked you to help us identify this unusual wooden contraption, and we may have a pretty good idea of the direction we’re headed!

The construction suggests a primitive wooden pack saddle, sometimes called a sawbuck. Devices like this were designed to sit across an animal’s back, providing a framework for carrying supplies over difficult terrain.

But here’s where the story gets interesting…

During World War II, the U.S. Coast Guard expanded its beach patrols to guard America’s coastline against potential enemy landings and sabotage. Some patrolmen rode horses along remote stretches of beach, earning the nickname “Sand Pounders.”

Horses offered a practical way to patrol areas where vehicles couldn’t easily travel, while pack animals could help move supplies through difficult terrain.

Now, here’s what has our attention: this piece was found among historical Coast Guard-related material.

Could it have been associated with that world of mounted coastal patrols and the equipment needed to operate along America’s shoreline during wartime? It’s an intriguing possibility, although we haven’t found documentation tying this exact piece to a Coast Guard unit or confirming its specific use.

That’s the challenge—and the fun—of historical detective work. Sometimes the clues point us in a promising direction before the final answer turns up!

🇺🇸 What do you think? Could this old wooden pack frame have a connection to the WWII Coast Guard beach patrols, or do you have another theory? Let us know in the comments!
