The Crane Family Vineyards Wine Club

At the heart of Crane Family Vineyards is the community with whom we share our wines. Our Wine Club was created to offer members true Napa Valley hospitality and a deeper connection to the estate.

Members receive allocations of our limited-production, estate-grown Reserve wines, released each spring and fall. Additionally, members enjoy:

The Winemaker Behind the Vines 🍷

Alison Green Doran’s journey into winemaking began in 1973, shaped early on by legendary mentor André Tchelistcheff. After hands-on harvest work at Simi Winery and an internship in Alsace, Alison went on to earn her degree in Fermentation Science from UC Davis and build her career at Firestone Vineyard. There, she rose from the lab to winemaker, crafting award-winning wines and developing a deep understanding of how to draw a vineyard’s full potential into every bottle.

Today, Alison is one of Napa Valley’s most respected and experienced winemakers, known for her thoughtful, site-driven approach. Her dedication to terroir and precision continues to guide the wines of Crane Family Vineyards, honoring the land and the legacy behind every vintage.

The Don Raffaele Estate

Our estate is named Don Raffaele, honoring Peter’s father, who was knighted by the Italian government for heroism during World War I before immigrating to the United States. He often remarked that this land reminded him of the hills of southern Italy where he grew up, creating a deeply personal for our family.

Set at 300 feet in elevation in the foothills of Mount Veeder, the vineyard benefits from excellent sun exposure, natural drainage, and diverse soils - ranging from gravelly loam to clay and shale beneath the surface. These conditions allow our grapes to develop exceptional balance, flavor, and aroma year after year.

The result is a wine shaped by its place, marked by depth, subtle earthiness, and the quiet spice of the land itself.

The Beginning of Our Story 🍷

In 1989, founders Peter Chiarella and Frances Crane Chiarella came to Napa Valley for a career opportunity that ultimately became a much deeper commitment. What began as a corporate relocation soon turned into a lifelong endeavor to plant a vineyard and build a home in the foothills of Mount Veeder.

In 2011, their son, Tom Chiarella stepped into the role of second-generation vintner bringing with him a deep respect for the land. What he didn't expect was a love story that began at a wine tasting where he first met Courtney.

More than 30 years later, we remain proud of what has been built here and grateful to continue the stewardship of this land for generations to come.

We are excited to begin a series this month honoring the legacy of Crane Family Vineyards. As a second generation, family-run winery, our story is intrinsically linked to the land itself, from our hillside Don Raffaele Estate at the foot of Mount Veeder to the wines we carefully grow and produce each year.

For nearly three decades, this small valley has shaped our wines with its rare microclimate and distinctive terroir, imparting a depth, character, and sense of place that is unmistakably our own. Making wine here is both tradition and art, passed down through generations and carried forward with intention.

Over the next two weeks, we invite you to learn more about our history and what continues to inspire us. And in 2026, we look forward to welcoming our Wine Club members, their guests, and new wine lovers seeking an experience off the beaten path to discover the hospitality of Crane Family Vineyards.

With winter comes the quiet beginning of a new vintage.

Just as January invites fresh starts, the dormant vineyard offers its own quiet promise. The vines may be resting now, bare and still, but beneath the surface lies anticipation for the season ahead and all that is yet to come.

This time of year is our pause. A clean slate, and a chance to slow down and reflect as we look forward to the months ahead.

And a happy holiday season it was! We had such a wonderful time celebrating with our family and friends, and hope your celebrations were just as joyful. This was an early Christmas party where we celebrated Peter's 93rd birthday.
