Owning a wedding planning business is for a very specific type of person. It isn’t just about being a fabulous wedding planner or having a keen eye for wedding design. You must also be a savvy business owner. If you’re lacking in either category, success always seems just out of reach & can make it feel like every wedding planner on Instagram is doing better than you.⁠

It’s not easy running a wedding planning business & being a wedding planner. You have to wear a lot of hats. You not only have to be a talented wedding planner, but you also have to be a marketer, a bookkeeper, a social media maven, a salesperson, a human resources manager & so much more. Plus, if you're planning weddings as a side hustle, while you’re working a soul-sucking job or while trying to raise a family, well, you have to be kind of a badass.⁠

Now, I’m not saying this to discourage you. In fact, the opposite is true. I want to ENCOURAGE you to keep on going. If it is really, truly your dream, to be a wedding planner - it’s there for you to take & succeed. You can have it all. But only if you give it your all and show up. Every. Single. Day.⁠

10 things I have learned from being a wedding planner⁠

I always say that being a wedding planner picked me. I always loved being a small business owner. It turned out that my need to organize, being a people pleaser and appreciation for a charcuterie spread made wedding planning a perfect fit for my personality.⁠

Today I’m sharing 10 things I’ve learned from being a wedding planner.⁠

1. Low prices lead to budget shoppers⁠

As a wedding planner, you meet with many engaged couples. You are hoping to turn them into clients. It can be very frustrating when you have a long meeting with a couple, feel like you really connected, start to get excited about their wedding & then they don’t book.

A prepared, thoughtful & genuine sales call that ends with you asking for the sale, will result in booking more clients.

Today I'm demystifying the sales call & breaking down my process for you.

PREPARE for the call. The call could be on the phone, a video call, or an in-person meeting. Review their contact form from your website. If you use a questionnaire (which I suggest you do) review that & print it so you can take notes. Have all your questions ready & sales pitch well-rehearsed so it flows like a natural conversation.

1 day before the call, send an email reminder to the couple. Be sure to include the who, what, where, when & why of the meeting. You will look like a real pro & they will appreciate the reminder.

Start THE CALL on time. If the call is at 11:00 am, call at 11:00 am, not 11:01 am. During the call, you are going to give them a taste of what it is like to work with you.

When the call starts, make friendly small talk to warm up to each other. Remember, the call is about them & how your skills can help them plan their wedding.

During the call, have a list of ?'s to ask them about themselves & their wedding. Anticipate their needs & ?'s, so you can address them before they ask. This is best done with a template so you are covering the same questions each time. You can add to the template as you keep going & see recurring ?'s.

Be sure to ASK FOR THE SALE. At the end of the call give your sales pitch, where you describe your specific wedding planning services & why you are the person to help make their wedding day fantastic & low stress. End with telling them the next step.

To wrap up the call, thank them for their time & ask if they have any final ?'s.

Don’t forget to follow up after the call. It is best to follow up within 24 hrs so that the call is fresh in their mind. Send their proposal, contract & options for payment promptly & make it as simple as possible.

Do bridesmaids pay for their own dresses? It's a common question, and the answer is almost always yes. "Bridesmaids are typically expected to pay for their own dresses," says Napa-based wedding planner Lindsey Nickel, founder of Lovely Day Events. While the bride will often have a vision of what bridesmaids are going to wear, the method of selecting dresses varies. Some may request that all bridesmaids wear the same dress, while others take a more relaxed approach to shopping (which may allow you to choose a more affordable option). Nickel adds that purchasing additional wedding day accessories also falls on bridesmaids. If you're given the go-ahead to shop freely, consider a variety of money-saving hacks to stay on budget. "If you can pick your own jewelry and shoes, look through what you already have or check thrift stores and websites like Facebook Marketplace for a good deal," she suggests.
