Week 4 Field Logs | Day 3

Standardization creates predictability.

When workflows vary, denials increase.
When standards exist, performance improves.

Strong revenue integrity programs establish clear expectations for documentation, education, workflows, compliance, and reimbursement.

Because revenue integrity starts before coding.

It starts with standardization.

If you’re looking for practical strategies to identify workflow gaps, reduce preventable denials, and strengthen reimbursement performance, I’ve put together a free resource:

This is my why.

Not the titles.
Not the credentials.
Not the accomplishments.

This.

A daughter who watched me refuse to quit.
A grandson who reminds me every day that legacy is bigger than success.

Growing up in a small, underserved town in South Carolina, I rarely saw healthcare leaders who looked like me. What I did see were hardworking people doing the best they could with limited resources and limited access. I learned early that education could change the trajectory of a life, and I made a promise to myself that I would never waste the opportunities I was given.

The road here wasn’t easy.

I’ve experienced loss, adversity, uncertainty, single motherhood, and seasons that tested every ounce of my strength. There were moments when the easier option would have been to give up. Instead, I kept moving forward.

More than two decades later, healthcare remains my purpose.

Whether I’m helping organizations recover revenue, analyzing denials, improving physician documentation, advising leaders on compliance and operational strategy, or contributing to CPT education through my work with the AMA, my mission has always been the same:

To make healthcare systems better for the people who depend on them.

Because behind every claim, every chart, every denial, and every process is a patient.

As I rebranded Revenue Integrity Coding Partners, I spent a lot of time reflecting on what matters most. The answer wasn’t building the biggest company or chasing the next title.

It was impact.

It was creating something rooted in integrity, service, education, and excellence.

It was building a legacy my daughter could be proud of and creating a future my grandson can look at and know that anything is possible.

Today, I’m in a season of gratitude.

My daughter is thriving at the University of Louisville. My grandson is one of life’s greatest blessings. My work is aligned with my purpose. And for the first time in a long time, I have something I spent years chasing:

Peace.

This brand is more than consulting.

It’s the story of resilience. It’s the pursuit of excellence. It’s a commitment to serve.

And it’s proof that where you start doesn’t determine how far you can go.♥️

The Best Denials Never Reach the Claim.

This week, I came across a familiar issue.

The service was performed correctly.

The documentation was present.

The coding was accurate.

Yet the claim was still at risk because the payer required a different telehealth modifier than what was configured in the system.

This wasn’t a coding problem.

It wasn’t a billing problem.

It was a workflow and system design problem.

Too often, organizations rely on coding or billing teams to catch issues that could have been prevented through automation, payer-specific edits, and operational controls.

Strong revenue integrity programs don’t just focus on fixing claims.

They focus on building processes that prevent predictable errors from occurring in the first place.

Because the most effective denial management strategy is preventing the denial altogether.

When I launched Revenue Integrity Coding Partners, I wasn’t interested in building just another coding or consulting company.

I wanted to build something that reflected how I view healthcare operations.

Over the years, I’ve learned that denials are rarely the actual problem.

They’re the symptom.

The real opportunity lies in understanding what happened upstream:

• Documentation expectations that weren’t clearly defined
• Workflow gaps that create downstream rework
• Provider education opportunities
• Operational processes that no longer support reimbursement requirements
• Disconnects between clinical, operational, and financial teams

That’s why Revenue Integrity Coding Partners focuses on more than coding.

We focus on revenue integrity.

Helping healthcare organizations identify root causes, strengthen documentation, improve provider education, optimize workflows, and build sustainable processes that support long-term success.

I’m grateful for every client, colleague, mentor, and connection who has been part of this journey.

If you’re new here, welcome.

If you’ve been following along, thank you for your continued support.

Revenue integrity isn’t owned by one department.

It’s the result of aligned workflows, provider education, documentation integrity, operational accountability, and reimbursement strategy.

When organizations treat revenue integrity as a shared responsibility, denials become more predictable, workflows become stronger, and reimbursement becomes more sustainable.

Week 4 begins with a simple observation:

Strong revenue integrity starts long before a claim is submitted.

Organizations with healthier reimbursement outcomes typically have:
✔ clearer workflows
✔ stronger provider education
✔ aligned operational teams
✔ proactive denial monitoring
✔ better documentation processes

Denials are rarely isolated billing issues.

They are operational signals showing where workflows, communication, and accountability may be breaking down.

When organizations focus only on “fixing denials,” they often miss the bigger opportunity:
preventing them upstream.

One of the biggest operational gaps surrounding wellness visits and modifier 25 usage has very little to do with coding itself.

It’s communication.

Many patients genuinely do not understand:
• preventive services
• annual wellness visits
• chronic condition management
• problem-oriented E/M services
• potential financial liability

And honestly, many organizations have not operationally aligned scheduling, registration, provider workflows, patient communication, and reimbursement expectations clearly enough to support consistency.

So what happens?

Patients leave frustrated.
Providers become frustrated.
Front-end teams struggle.
Denial management teams inherit downstream issues.

But these situations are rarely isolated coding problems.

They are operational alignment problems.

Strong systems create stronger patient trust.

One thing healthcare organizations continue struggling with is the disconnect between wellness visits, chronic condition management, modifier 25 usage, and patient financial expectations.

And honestly — many of these situations are not just coding problems.

They are operational workflow problems.

When provider expectations, scheduling workflows, documentation, coding interpretation, and patient communication are inconsistent, organizations often see:
• recurring denials
• patient confusion
• provider frustration
• inconsistent reimbursement
• increased compliance risk

Strong revenue integrity programs don’t just focus on correcting claims after the fact.

They focus on building systems that prevent issues before they happen.

Because when operational expectations are unclear, coding becomes the cleanup department.

One of the biggest mistakes organizations make is treating preventive wellness visit challenges as isolated coding issues.

In reality, many of these recurring problems stem from operational gaps:
• unclear visit intent
• inconsistent modifier 25 usage
• workflow misalignment
• documentation inconsistencies
• limited governance pathways
• patient financial confusion

Mature revenue integrity programs don’t just focus on correcting claims after the fact.

They focus on building systems that prevent issues before they happen.

Because when operational expectations are unclear, coding eventually becomes the cleanup department.

Systems matter.
Governance matters.
Prevention matters.

Coding was never part of my original plan.

It found me — and I fell in love with it.

At the time, I was a practice manager deeply involved in revenue cycle operations within oral healthcare. Working across multiple dental specialties exposed me to an entirely different side of healthcare operations and reimbursement.

Because when you work in oral surgery and specialty dental billing, you quickly learn something important:

Oral healthcare IS healthcare.

I had to understand medical coding.
I had to understand documentation.
I had to understand reimbursement rules.
I had to understand the “why” behind denials and payer requirements.

That curiosity eventually led me to a medical coding bootcamp that I absolutely do NOT recommend 😂

But somehow, out of a room full of people, I was one of only three who passed the certification exam on the first attempt.

And little did I know…

That one certification would completely change the trajectory of my career.

What started as coding evolved into:
• revenue cycle leadership
• operational strategy
• denial prevention
• physician education
• workflow optimization
• revenue integrity consulting
• CPT® enhanced content development
• healthcare operations leadership

Coding became the foundation.

And from there, I grew into the “unicorn” people know today — someone who understands not just the codes, but the systems, workflows, operations, and organizational strategy surrounding them.

I tell people all the time:
It doesn’t matter where you start.
It matters where you’re willing to grow.

And honestly?
I’m nowhere near the end yet.

Today, I’m incredibly grateful for the path, the lessons, the relationships, and the opportunities this profession has afforded me.

So on National Medical Coders Day — thank you to every coder who shows up daily to bring clarity to complexity, protect compliance, strengthen revenue integrity, and support patient care behind the scenes.

Your work matters more than most people realize. ♥️
