Yesterday, members of the Lisbon Water Department Woodard & Curran team participated in a regional drinking water emergency tabletop exercise hosted by Tom Bahun of Tom's Water Solutions LLC.
The exercise walked local utilities and representatives from partner agencies like the U.S. National Weather Service (NWS), Maine Water Utilities Association, MEWARN, Maine CDC Drinking Water Program, the GEOLOGICAL SURVEY MAINE, County EMAs, electrical power companies and fuel suppliers like Central Maine Power and Dead River Company through a realistic hypothetical emergency scenario and reinforced something important: relationships, communication, and planning matter long before an actual emergency happens.
These types of exercises are a great opportunity to test your thinking, identify gaps in your utilities planning, and build connections with the organizations you may rely on during a real event. If your utility isn’t already participating in regional emergency preparedness exercises, it’s absolutely worth getting involved.
Big thanks to Tom’s Water Solutions, all of the participating agencies and utilities for helping strengthen regional resiliency and preparedness, and to Maine Water for hosting us in their beautiful facility in Biddeford, ME.
