Summer time storms can cause problems in your home when you are not there. Today on a visit I found a dining room light was on. This was odd in that I had never turned it on before. When I went to turn it off, the dimmer switch was extremely hot. Using my infra red digital thermometer I found the switch was around 170 degrees! I was not able to turn the switch off so I needed to switch the power for that light off at the fuse box. Meeting electrician this morning. Electrician believes some sort of electrical surge caused the malfunction. Disaster averted.
