It was a pleasure to take part in the 2nd Annual Ombuds Day celebration hosted by the ABA’s Dispute Resolution Section of which I am a member. The theme this year “Ombuds: Unusual name. Important service”. Our speaker was Chuck Howard, Executive Director of the International Ombudsman Association. Ombuds are confidential, impartial, and independent conflict management professionals providing a valuable form of alternative dispute resolution serving as third parties to address and resolve individual and systemic issues outside formal channels. The Ombudsman profession has been in practice for centuries, and present in the US since the 1960’s.
