Your hard work doesn't reward you forever. There comes a point where you have to slow down to speed up.

I've been there - burned out, wondering why I'm doing this, that I thought it should be easier by now - and then I made it easier.

I made intentional decisions that built an engine without needing me 24/7.

It's why Amanda & I are hosting Scaling Beyond The Founder in July - because you deserve to be able to do it different.

Is leadership an exclusive club for those who are naturally extroverted & charismatic, or is it a skill anyone can develop?

I received this epic quote from Simon Sinek in my inbox today and it reminded me of when Nova was asked by Gabb Wireless what she thinks a great leader is, & her answer brought tears to my eyes.

“I think a good leader is very courageous and makes sure that the people they are working for are happy, and doing their best work.”

Hearing it from a 9 year old, it begs the question is someone born with natural leadership skills? Or, is it a skill anyone can develop?

I’m big on nature vs/& nurture so let’s dive into that regarding leadership.

Studies show 30-60% of leadership ability can be attributed to genetics. Charisma & Emotional Intelligence (E.Q.) being the high attributing nature factors.

70% of leadership development happens on the job, 20% through mentoring, 10% through formal training. (Center for Creative Leadership)

Though some are born with very high E.Q., typically it naturally increases with age AND can be polished through training.

And while certain personality traits make leadership easier for some, skills like communication, decision-making, & conflict resolution are learned & imperative for long term leadership success.

All things considered, Leadership is not an exclusive club.

Sure, like most things, some are naturally gifted in this area.

But, anyone with a growth mindset who wants to put in the work, can achieve success as a leader.

What did you have to really work as a leader, that didn’t come naturally?

Only measuring progress by “more” creates an ego attachment to more. Is your ego attached to more?

The funny thing here is, more isn’t always money, material things, more followers, a higher title, a bigger house, more sales…

Sometimes it’s more…
complaining…
worrying…
struggle…

Ego doesn’t care what feeds it, it’s fed by identification.

Once you become aware that you’re attaching yourself to something, that’s when transformation happens.

That’s when the ego slows its growth.

Becoming aware is the only way to achieve peace in your life.

If you desire peace, become aware of how you’re feeding your ego.

When you’re ready to become more aware, I highly recommend this book 👉 https://amzn.to/3Wot5rU

70% of salespeople struggle with depression. Compare that to other careers and the range is 15-30%. Why the drastic difference?

High achieving sales people have always believed their results = their value.

If they work harder, their results will be better, and their value will rise.

They inherently are competitive, push themselves & want to be challenged.

Unlike other careers though, they start over from 0…

- every month
- every year

It’s a constant reminder: “prove your value”

It can be exhilarating.
Sometimes though, it leads to questioning your true value as a human being.

It took losing my job in 2013 to force me to face that my true value wasn’t associated with my title, or results.

During that grueling 6 months of unemployment I started asking myself one question to keep depression at bay:

“Have you done all you can do to leave each person better than you found them today?”

Because I couldnt control…
- if I got an interview call
- if I got an offer

But I could control how I treated people.

And sometimes the only way out of depression is to stop thinking about yourself and to help someone else.

One day that simply meant stopping to talk to the old man walking his dog and asking how he was doing.

I didn’t have energy for much…but getting out of my own head helped.

Tying your value to things that die when you do, will never serve you.

So if you find yourself down & self critical, remember that you’re so much more than a title that you hold or the dollars you bring in.

I've never let my kids win, in anything.
They have to earn it.

I've gotten a lot of hate over the years for it, especially when they were toddlers, but I never saw the benefit in letting them win.

Whether it was a board game, basketball game, bike race or rock paper scissors...we all competed to the best of our ability.

It didn't start out well.
As toddlers they'd cry and we'd have the same conversation.

"It's taken me decades to get this good, and one day you'll probably be better than me. But only if you keep trying."

They're fierce competitors, and they hate losing.
So, it only lit a fire in them.

Slowly they started beating me.
Dominoes.
Cards.
Football.
Basketball.

Soon...it will be running.

But if I'd handed them that first win at 2 years old, I wouldn't know what it feels like to watch my child surpass me because they refused to give up.

Swallowing my pride never felt so good.

How much longer do you think I have before they beat my beach sprint? 😂

I entered college as an Art major. In my first semester my professor ranted saying "no one makes any money in the Arts unless you teach." As a naive 18 year old, I believed her, then changed my major.

I closed out that semester by putting all my art supplies in my massive folder and never opened it again.
..until I had to throw it away because it got destroyed in my garage after one too many Midwest winters.

When my studies shifted from Art to Business Management, I was deflated but excited.

As I was wrapping up my degree a few years later I asked myself...
"what if I married the two?"

So, I did.

2 years after graduating I started Mango Tree Photography.
9 years after graduating I started AKA Communications.
11 years after graduating I started Fox & Goose Studios.

While pulling in a corporate salary I founded businesses surrounding the arts and my creative skills.

The one I'm most proud of though...is where I chose to be a different example than that professor.

Where I showed these two that their ideas can be turned into a book.
A book full of jokes and illustrations.
That they signed for every single customer, even though he could barely hold a pen.

That pairing their artistic talent with business knowledge meant they can reach 13 countries and all 50 United States.

That the limit to what's possible is only created in their mind.

People will coach you on the narratives that they believe to be true for themselves.

It doesn't mean they need to be true for you.

I started Mango Tree Photography in 2011 as a celebration after being promoted in my corporate role. Here’s why starting it then served me, even though I was already at the edge of burnout.

My career had become all consuming. I revolved everything around it.

While I loved being productive, getting promotions & making more money, I also knew that it was burning me out.

So, how does it make sense to start something on the side when you’re already on the edge of burnout?

Well…hobbies are key to career satisfaction, improving mental health, & eliminating burnout.

I knew this well.

So, as a fitness enthusiast I’d continued my hobby of challenging myself physically.

But…that had even become a ✔️

Work.
Working out.

That was my life.

What about fun?
What about creativity?

Somewhere along the way in adulthood, I’d lost the prioritization of fun.

So, I got my promotion and my husband & I went shopping. We got my dream camera & lenses and I started shooting.

The next day I hopped on a flight for work and spent the entire flight brainstorming the name of this hobby side gig…

Eric & I had always said we’ll sit “beneath the mango tree”…referencing our song Better Together…so I went full cheese mode & named the gig…

Mango Tree Photography

40-60 hours a week remained dedicated to my corporate career.

10ish hours became dedicated to fun through Mango Tree Photography.

For the first time in my adult life, I didn’t really care about the money.

I fell in love with capturing some of the most memorable moments for people.

And even though I was “working” more hours than before, I wasn’t feeling burned out.

I was excited & inspired.
I showed up to work chipper.
Because, I felt alive again.

If your hobbies have taken a back seat because you’re “adulting” too hard, I dare you to make 2025 different.

What hobby are you going to pour more into this year?

One of the hardest parts of my job at Sprint 20 years ago was telling people their contacts could not be transferred to their new device. It was my first lesson in setting customer expectations and here's what I did.

Every customer upgrading their device was excited.

Most times they were eligible for an upgrade so they got a lot of $$$ off a new device.

But, there was always a lot of pain that came with the change of getting a new phone.

So, we talked about the pain of their old phone, a lot.

Pains like:
- Features...
- Having a Samsung but wanting a Blackberry 😂 ...
- Coverage area
- Software updates
- flip part always breaking
- no customizable faceplates

Not to mention the ever important features only available on certain phones...
- Custom ring tones
- Ringback tones

𝘐𝘧 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘨𝘶𝘦𝘴𝘴𝘦𝘥 𝘮𝘺 𝘳𝘪𝘯𝘨𝘣𝘢𝘤𝘬 𝘸𝘢𝘴 𝘚𝘯𝘢𝘱 𝘠𝘰 𝘍𝘪𝘯𝘨𝘦𝘳𝘴, 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘮𝘢𝘺 𝘩𝘢𝘷𝘦 𝘣𝘦𝘦𝘯 𝘳𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵. 🎉

Then, I always ended on the most painful.....
"transferring contacts though, that's the worst!"

Bringing that pain to the front, calling it out & commiserating made me relatable.

Every customer always agreed, we laughed about it, then I'd follow it up with...

"But, then you can finally delete those 'Hot Guy at Bar' numbers that you don't even remember."

We'd laugh again..but I was setting their expectations.

Expectations surrounding them doing the work of writing down their own contacts and manually transferring them.

Because, our contact transfer machine would only work between 40-70% of the time.

So, I got ahead of it.

When we'd get to the point of checkout, if I knew we had the port for their old phone, I'd ask "we do have a contact transfer machine in the back. Sometimes it works and sometimes doesn't. Would you like me to try and transfer your contacts for you? I'd be happy to try to save you some time."

Working retail is HARD.
I'd witnessed colleagues deal with very upset customers when the transfer machine wouldn't work. So, I crafted my own approach to make sure their experience was top notch.

It landed me with a 💯 secret shopping scores & a promotion.

But all I've gotta say is the cloud was the best invention ever.

⤵️ Throwback to the first corporate Holiday party I ever attended circa 2006 with Sprint & Northern PCS. 🥂

If you knew me during my Sprint days - do you also miss spending your entire paycheck on ringback tones?😂

When I showed up with my daughters 5 year old signature tattooed on my forearm, she got angry. And, I knew she would.

Because it wasn’t her “best signature”.

And I told her that’s why I love it.
I love that she & her signature are imperfect.

It bothered her for months.

“It’s too messy, mama. I can do better than that.”

Over the next 4 years she started to randomly pull my sleeve up, look at it and smirk.

One day when she did, she leaned down and kissed it.

“I think I love it now too, mama. Its kind of like a first draft.”

From the time they’re born, little girls are often taught by society to be perfect.

To “be a lady”.
To “be nice”.
To “not cause trouble”.

When they’re born with natural perfectionist tendencies, it makes it an even harder battle to fight. And sometimes figuring out how to equip them for that battle, is overwhelming.

The lengths I go to, to teach my kids lessons…
are quite intense…

…but if tattooing her imperfect signature reminds her to embrace her imperfections, to humbly acknowledge them and aids in building her confidence, it was worth it.
