Rose Marie Sanchez and Claire Sundquist on Naselle's main street in the 1930's. The old Landing Bridge is visible that led to the main highway and the turning the corner on the right would lead one to the original Okie's Merk and South Fork bridge. Rare scene from a post by Jerry McCollum.

Knappton in it's best years. This mill was active from 1870 to July 1941. A fire started in the boiler room and consumed the mill, much of the sawn lumber and 90% of the town in a few hours. The fire burned through the wooden water supply pipe which doomed the efforts of the crew to extinquish the blaze. 85 people lost their livelihood in a few hours. The car ferry ceased operations soon after due to the sudden loss of population. Today the last remaining pilings silently pay homage to the memories of the past.

Brix Brothers Log Dump at Knappton, Wa. dating to the 1940s. One of the Chain drive trucks is dumping it's one log load using a crude but effective cable system. This log came from the West side of Dell Creek Ridge that looms over Naselle to the West. The trucks ran on a plank road for more than 3 miles which had cable strands fastened to any grades to enable traction for the rubber tired log trucks. In our walks along that road we discovered a wrecked truck in a draw with the Sterling Brand still visible on the shattered front grille. In the background the long curved beach which leads to the forgotten village of Frankfort is visible. Below the dock a Skiff and small Launch are waiting for their turn in the action. This is Deep River Logging's locomotive 'Skookum" shortly after rolling over in 1953 near the Herman Schlick farm on Deep River camp road Near Naselle, WA. After many years it was salvaged, restored and is now running as a tourist train in Northern CA.

Here we see the Saldern Logging Co. Crew widening a cut in 1905 near Grays River, Wa. The present day Hwy. 4 still roughly follows where this RR was built. The outfit went bust not long after this scene and became a Brix Logging Division to finish the logging on KM. Brix also had negotiations for the upper GR Fossil Creek timber but they were unable to come to terms for it. Photo credit to OOP.

Kandoll Brothers Logging near the top of KM in 1961. One of my first jobs in the woods, my Mothers Brothers, Uncles John, Ted, Wiljo and Gust were the owners. We are doing repairs on the Cat D8 undercarriage. The NW Loader was used to lift the cat for access to the rollers. The donkey on the right is a Willamette used for pulling logs in using a shop built A-Frame as a spar. Hidden behind is my first new Pickup, a 1961 Ford F-100, full price $2856 , 4 spd/V8. So when you travel East near the top of KM look to the right where you may see the ghosts of the past still at it.
