1966 photo of the Radar Installation on top of Radar Ridge. Inside the domes personnel were marking aircraft positions to the West on giant 50 ft. screens from catwalks using marking crayons. We were given a tour from school in the late 1950s. In those days there was a fear that enemy bombers would come from the West. Part of the school prep was instruction on hiding under our desk when the air raid warning was sounded. This installation was a link in the DEW line, [Distant Early Warning] system that stretched from California to Alaska. Mt Hebo and Neah Bay had similar installations.

Young men from throughout the USA came to Naselle during the Radar Station years. Here is a group at Red's Cafe at Ilwaco dating to late 1950's/early 60's having coffee time. Some Naselle girls of the era met their future mates from among the young men. The only evidence remaining of these days is the former Youth Camp complex that was built for the Air Force Station.

Before the Knappton Mill fire. Knappton in it's best years. This mill was active from 1870 to July 1941. A fire started in the boiler room and consumed the mill, much of the sawn lumber and 90% of the town in a few hours. The fire burned through the wooden water supply pipe which doomed the efforts of the crew to extinquish the blaze. 85 people lost their livelihood in a few hours. The car ferry ceased operations soon after due to the sudden loss of population. Today the last remaining pilings silently pay homage to the memories of the past.

After the devastating fire, July 6, 1941. A total loss of the mill and town.
