I feel like our regulations in Washington are intentionally confusing.

A few key misconceptions I see are that a) you can Only prospect during specific times of year, and b) motorized equipment is Not allowed.

While it's true that timing restrictions are in place for specific prospecting activities, hand panning aggregate outside of the wetted perimeter and not from the slope is allowed year-round within the parameters set forth in the Gold and Fish Pamphlet.

Motorized equipment is allowed but typically requires a HPA. The Gold and Fish Pamphlet acts as your HPA for other activities.

Remember, lots of individuals and companies claim that their materials are ethically sourced, yet are selling them for next to nothing. I see it all the time, even with popular/famous mineral suppliers.

Why?

Because a), the miners, sometimes underage, are working in dangerous conditions for next to nothing. Therefore, the materials are not ethically mined.

Or b), the materials are synthetic, dyed, treated, or otherwise unnatural.

If the price is too good to be true, ask yourself why.
