New Blog Post: Significant Winter Storm and Arctic Blast to Impact Much of Nation

As an arctic airmass pours into the eastern two thirds of the nation, a developing low pressure system will bring wintry weather to many areas that are unaccustomed to it. The overall weather pattern so far this winter has been dominated by a trough of low pressure centered over the Great Lakes with...

A strong coastal storm will take shape this weekend and bring nasty weather to the East Coast, including fierce winds, heavy rain, and dangerous seas from the Carolinas all the way up through New England.

What to expect:
Heavy rain with several inches possible in spots.
Powerful winds gusting 40–60 mph, especially near the coast.
Coastal flooding and beach erosion.

The storm will form offshore between Florida and South Carolina on Saturday, strengthen as it moves north, and hug the coast through Monday. Areas from North Carolina to New Jersey and southern New England will take the brunt of the impacts.

Nor’easters can happen any time of year, most frequently between September and April.

We’ve got a very interesting setup in the Atlantic right now. Hurricane Humberto is currently a Category 4 storm, and just to the west we’re watching Tropical Cyclone 9, which is expected to strengthen into a tropical storm this weekend.

What makes this situation especially intriguing is the potential for something called the Fujiwhara effect. This happens when two nearby cyclones interact, rotating around one another and sometimes drawing closer together.

Many models are showing TC 9 move towards the Carolinas and then pulling out to follow Humberto. Nonetheless, residents along the Southeast Coast and in the Carolinas should remain vigilant, as this system could produce very heavy rainfall.

Tropical Storm Humberto is moving northwest in the Atlantic and is expected to strengthen over the next few days, possibly reaching major hurricane status early next week as it passes southwest of Bermuda.

Meanwhile, Invest 94L near the Caribbean has a high chance of developing into a tropical depression later this week near the Bahamas. This system has the potential to bring heavy rainfall to the Southeast and the Carolinas next week. The next name on the list is Imelda.

Hurricane Gabrielle is still out in the Atlantic, expected to reach the Azores Friday morning. More information in the latest blog post.

Tropical Storm Gabrielle is out in the Atlantic, well east of the Caribbean. Winds are near 50 mph and the storm is expected to strengthen into a hurricane as it moves northwest over the next couple of days. Gabrielle should stay out to sea, passing well east of Bermuda late Sunday into Monday.

We’re also keeping an eye on a tropical wave just off the west coast of Africa. While it’s currently disorganized, it could gradually develop over the next week while moving WNW over the Atlantic.

New Blog Post: Is The Atlantic Finally Waking Up?

September is normally the peak of hurricane season, but that hasn't been that case this year, things have been quiet for a while now, though that could be changing. The last time there was an active system in the Atlantic was on August 29, when Tropical Storm Fernand became extratropical more than 6...

The central Atlantic tropical wave that we have been tracking this past week is becoming less favorable for development as dry air limits its growth.

The system will likely be located near the Lesser Antilles by the middle part of next week, and residents there should continue to monitor its progress.

A cold front moving through the Northeast will bring the risk for scattered severe thunderstorms this afternoon and evening.

Threats include: damaging winds, hail, localized flash flooding, frequent lightning, and a low end tornado risk. The prime window for stronger storms will be 1-7 PM.

While the rain will be much needed for portions of the region experiencing severe drought, some storms may bring hazardous conditions. Take caution if heading to an outdoor event today!
