Stainless steel contamination and rouging can look like the same problem, but they aren't.

Contamination can be introduced during fabrication through contact with carbon steel, weld oxidation, particulate or improper handling. Rouging develops in service, particularly in high-purity water and pure-steam systems, and its source isn't always where the discoloration appears.

Knowing the difference defines what a fabricator can control before a component goes online.

We break down how contamination occurs, the three classes of rouge and the fabrication practices used to reduce avoidable contamination risk.

Causes of stainless steel contamination and rouging in high-purity systems, plus warning signs and prevention for biopharm and semiconductor OEMs.

When a design calls for complex tubing runs, precision tube bending can reduce the number of fittings needed while creating cleaner, more efficient routing.

For high-purity systems, fewer connections can also help lower contamination risk and support long-term performance.

We take a closer look at where tube bending fits into the fabrication process.

High-purity component manufacturing can require specialized equipment, skilled welders, cleanroom capabilities and strict process controls that don’t always make sense to maintain in-house.

We’ve updated our component manufacturing guide with more detail on the processes behind weldments, manifolds and tube assemblies, along with contamination control, traceability and the role contract manufacturing can play when specialized capabilities are required.

A quality problem that arises on the production floor may have started much earlier. We see problems that stem from issues like: material choices; part geometry; supplier capabilities; tolerances; production volume; and the number of processes and handoffs required to get from component to finished assembly.

It’s commonly understood that decisions made during planning and sourcing affect cost and lead time, but they can also impact quality all the way through production.

Looking at the entire manufacturing strategy early can help identify potential problems while there's still time to solve them.

Manufacturing strategy matters to align fabrication, assembly, cleanliness, and validation requirements from the start.

What cleanroom manufacturing means at Axenics:

Cleanroom manufacturing is a full production discipline, not just a controlled room. Axenics maintains Class 100 (ISO 5) certification through continuous air filtration, positive-pressure control, and rigorous cleanroom entry procedures that ensure zero contamination from personnel.

Tools and fixtures are pre-cleaned and vacuumed before entry, while unapproved materials such as paper and cardboard are prohibited. These measures create repeatable, contamination-free results that meet the most demanding semiconductor and life science standards. Manufacturers across semiconductor, medical device, and high-purity industries continue looking for ways to improve system performance while reducing unnecessary complexity. One area that can have a major impact is tubing layout. Excess fittings, difficult routing paths, and inconsistent fabrication can all introduce challenges that affect performance over time.

Axenics provides precision tube bending services and fabrication support for manufacturers that require cleaner routing, fewer fittings, and improved system reliability. In many applications, custom tube bending can help simplify assemblies while supporting better overall performance. Learn more:

Manufacturing Strategy Should Be the First Step

Many organizations still treat manufacturing as something that happens after design is “done.” Drawings are released, specs are locked, and then manufacturers are asked to make it work.

At that point, the best options may already be gone.

Material choices, tolerances, weld access, assembly sequence, cleanliness standards, and documentation requirements all shape how a system can be built. Once those decisions are made, manufacturers are forced to work around constraints instead of optimizing for reliability and repeatability of the process.

Bringing manufacturing expertise in early doesn’t slow things down. It reduces the rework that may otherwise show up later.

This is where Axenics fits naturally into the process. Learn more:

If You’re Seeing Contamination in Your Fluid System

Contamination does not always come from the fluid itself. In many cases, it is introduced by the system.

We see this most often at the weld. When welds are not tightly controlled, defects like lack of pe*******on, internal oxidation (sugaring), or slight joint misalignment can create microscopic crevices and rough surfaces inside the flow path. These are easy to miss during fabrication but show up quickly during operation, whether as particle generation, biofilm risk, or failed cleaning validation..

Other internal irregularities can include:

- Small crevices where fluid can collect
- Irregular internal surfaces that shed particulates
- Areas that are difficult to fully clean or flush
- If contamination is recurring or difficult to trace, it may be built into the system.

We approach this potential challenge by focusing on internal weld quality, not just structural integrity. That means controlled parameters, repeatable procedures, and fabrication practices designed to minimize disruption inside the system. Learn more:

If you see contamination, the plastic weld quality may be the source, not the material. Weld quality matters more than some teams expect.

Ensuring Safety and Purity with TIG Welding

Inspection is integral to TIG welding for medical device manufacturing, guaranteeing the delivery of pristine, defect-free components. All raw materials, such as stainless steel tubing, undergo rigorous inspection to detect and rectify any imperfections before welding commences.

Post-welding inspections include meticulous leak testing and comprehensive quality assessments to confirm that components meet stringent medical standards before they reach original equipment manufacturers (OEMs). This thorough testing process assures manufacturers that every component integrated into their medical devices is completely reliable and free from defects.

Technological advancements consistently challenge welders to refine their techniques further. Axenics recognizes this evolving demand, investing continuously in training their welders to master complex welding projects. Learn more:

TIG welding is an ideal choice for the manufacturing of medical device components, as it is the highest-purity form of welding.
