Listening is the single most important part of communication - hands down - no debate.
The second most important part is to do your listening slowly, by which ; I mean, really take in what was said before you react (say the first thing that pops into your head).
Your reaction (comment) could do one of three things - the first two are critically important:
1. Your reaction (comment) could tear someone down (even if you didn't mean to).
2. Your reaction (comment) could build someone up (this is always the way to go).
3. It could go by with no effect whatsoever.
I find that when someone hurts another with a quick reaction to something that was said - no harm was meant. They simply responded quickly to something that was said. DON'T downplay this kind of hurt, it could and to frequently does - cut to the core of another's very heart.
Remember! When communicating. Listen fully. Think (take in the words spoken) slowly. Respond only in a way that can build someone up.
