Is it the baby blues, PPD, or PPA? đź’

Maternal mental health doesn’t look just one way, and symptoms can show up anytime during pregnancy or postpartum.

What you’re feeling might be:
• Baby Blues
• Depression
• Anxiety
✳️ Perinatal Mental Health Disorders also include OCD, bipolar mood disorders, PTSD, and psychosis. ✳️

The Baby Blues are short-term dips in mood caused by the changes of having a baby, and typically dissipate on their own. Depression and anxiety are common, temporary, and treatable, but they do require support.

Too often, parents experience symptoms like: irritability, racing thoughts, guilt, sadness, intrusive thoughts, or constant worry… and don’t realize there’s a name for it.

When we connect the dots, we make maternal mental health visible.
And when it’s visible, it becomes treatable, supportable, and understood.

In honor of Black Maternal Health Week, we joined the Maternal Mortality Walk at Centennial Park, hosted by The Melanated Birth Collective Nashville. It was a powerful and deeply intentional gathering that allowed us to remember friends and family who passed away during childbirth. It also brought urgent attention to the persistent, unjust health disparities that especially impact pregnant Black women.

When got pregnant, it had been after many years of feeling disconnected from her body, for a number of reasons. After diagnosing and treating stage 4 endometriosis, she had been looking forward to a stretch of her life where her body felt like her own again—until pregnancy derailed that.

Once she had Scottie, her daughter with , Hewitt had to decide how she would feed her baby. She weighed her mental health, her recovery, and the kind of mother she wanted to be. In the end, she decided against breastfeeding. “My thought process was layered,” she writes for ELLE. “The most important thing to me was doing what is best for my baby. I will always do what is best for her.”

Now a few months into motherhood, Hewitt opens up about the contradictions, complex guilt, and learning to accept support in a culture that quietly equates suffering with devotion. Read her essay at the link in comments.
