Bad bookkeeping gets expensive twice. 💸

First, you pay to have the transactions recorded.

Then, when it’s time to make bigger financial decisions, you may end up paying someone else to clean up the numbers before they can even advise you. 📊

And meanwhile? You’ve lost time. ⏳

Your accounting and bookkeeping should give you a clean, reliable financial picture — so when you’re ready to hire, invest, expand or make a major decision, you’re not starting by untangling the past.

That’s the difference between simply recording what happened and having financial information you can actually use to move the business forward. 📈

The goal is simple: get the cleanest, straightest line from your numbers to better decisions.

Because good financial strategy starts with numbers you can trust. 🤝

Growth isn’t always the next move. Sometimes the next move is getting your numbers ready for growth.

Before you hire another person, add another truck, take on more work, or expand into a new service line, you should be able to answer a few basic financial questions with confidence.

Do you know what cash will look like 30 days from now?
Which jobs are actually profitable?
Can the business consistently pay you?
Are you reviewing your numbers every month?
Could you handle a few slower months without borrowing?

If some of those answers are “no” or “I’m not sure,” that doesn’t mean your business isn’t successful.

It means there are financial gaps worth fixing before growth makes them bigger.

Swipe through the 5-question self-assessment, keep your score, and see where your business stands.

And if your numbers are telling you it’s time for more clarity, we can help you build the financial foundation for your next stage of growth.

25 years ago I was finishing basic training in the US Air Force, in San Antonio, Texas, when everything changed. I didn’t watch it unfold on the news — I lived it from the inside, surrounded by people who, within hours, had to choose between fear and duty.

Since then, every September 11th I think about the same thing: the people who ran toward danger while everyone else ran to save themselves. Firefighters, police officers, service members, and so many ordinary people who became something much bigger than themselves that day.

Over the years I’ve learned that real leadership has nothing to do with a title or a nice office. Leadership is showing up when someone needs you, even when you have no idea how, even when the fear is there too. That’s leadership in times of crisis, and it’s something I’ve carried with me ever since, into every decision I make, in business and beyond.

Today I honor those who are no longer here, and everyone who has served and sacrificed since that day. Thank you, from the bottom of my heart.

Bringing on full-time staff in marketing, finance, or any part of the C-suite is expensive — and for most small businesses, it's not actually what they need yet.

In Season 1, Episode 30 of C-Suite Secrets, I sat down with Jonathan W. Buckley, a Silicon Valley veteran and fractional CMO who has helped dozens of enterprise tech startups build repeatable, predictable revenue engines. Jonathan's built his entire practice around one idea: assemble the strategy and experience of a senior executive team, without the full-time cost.

It's the same logic behind fractional CFO work 💡. Instead of hiring a full-time CFO, CMO, or COO before you're ready, you get access to senior-level expertise and strategic guidance at a fraction of the cost — scaled to the stage your business is actually at, not the overhead of a role you can't sustain yet.

Whether you're a startup approaching a Series B round or a small business trying to grow without breaking the bank, fractional leadership gives you the expertise without the burn rate. 📈

When your business finally starts generating real profit, the next question comes up: what do you do with that money?

A lot of blue-collar business owners reach a point where it's no longer just about surviving the month, but about growing what they've built. And that's where something most people were never taught comes in: how to analyze the commercial market before investing.

Buying a property because it "looks good" is not the same as understanding the numbers behind that investment: projected cash flow, market comparables, real risk versus expected return.

In this episode of C-Suite Secrets, I talk about exactly this: how to make smart investment decisions that build long-term wealth, not just impulsive moves.

"Hire for culture, train for skill."
That line stuck with me after my conversation with Mark Lewis on the podcast, and I'm sharing it because I feel like it sums up something I see over and over working with small business owners.

Anyone applying for a role at your company probably has the technical skills you need. But the question that really matters is different: will this person actually fit into the culture you're building?

Something Mark said in that conversation really made me think: the fastest way to lose your best employees is to tolerate the ones who don't perform. Because your good people notice when the standard slips, and that's when talent starts quietly walking out the door.

Hiring, retention, and even the hard moment of letting someone go — all three need to be aligned with your business's culture if you want that business to grow in a healthy way.

If you're building a small business with a team that depends on you, this one's worth your time. Watch the full clip and tell me in the comments: is your hiring process built for culture, or just for resumes?

Billing a lot isn't the same as making money.

I see it constantly: business owners closing out a record billing month and still feeling like the money isn't enough. The reason is simple: revenue and profit tell two completely different stories.

Here's a real example I use with my clients. An 8-person agency billed $100,000 in one month. Sounds amazing, right? But after paying the team, subcontractors, tools, overhead, and taxes, what the owner actually kept was $6,000.
A six-figure month, with a 6% margin. On paper, it looks like success. In the bank account, it feels like survival.

Where does the margin go? Almost always to the same three places: pricing that doesn't cover the real cost of delivering the work, project scope that grows without being billed for, and overhead that climbs alongside revenue without anyone recalculating it.

This week I want to leave you with one question: of everything you billed last month, how much of it is still yours today?

If that answer makes you uncomfortable, that's exactly the right place to start. I can help you build out the numbers so decisions get easier.

Comment "PROFIT" and I'll tell you how.

Before I became a CFO, I was in the military and that discipline never left me.

In the Air Force you learn something you never forget: plans fail when there's no structure. No matter how much effort you put in, if you don't have a system, sooner or later something breaks.

The exact same thing happens with your business finances.
You can work 12-hour days, have the best clients, the best reputation in your industry — and still not know if you're actually making money. Because no one taught you to read your numbers like an operation, with structure and discipline.

That's what I brought from the military into the world of finance: not just technical knowledge, but the mindset that a business needs a system that works, no matter what. 💪
