This week, Wilmot’s Dave Adams facilitated a panel on regional Solar for All programs at the 2024 Tennessee Valley Solar + Storage Conference in Huntsville, Alabama.

Solar for All is a multi-billion-dollar federal grant to increase low-income solar programs, which will deliver on the Greenhouse Gas Reduction Fund’s objectives by reducing emissions and air pollution, lowering electric bills, and unlocking new markets for distributed solar.

We are thankful for community solar programs that bring low-income and disadvantaged communities access to clean and affordable energy. Wilmot has already completed one community solar project for Nashville Electric Services called Music City Solar, and we can’t wait for more in the future. https://wilmotinc.com/new-blog/2019/6/3/music-city-solar

Happy Halloween from the Wilmot team!
One of the spookiest things we at Wilmot Inc. can think of is waste in our waterways. Last Saturday, we joined the Cumberland River Compact (CRC) in removing litter and debris from Stonemeade Stream, a tributary of the Cumberland River. Plus we got to dress up early!

Did you know in 2023 CRC removed 34,300 pounds of trash from our local waterways? Their mission to “enhance the health and enjoyment of the Cumberland River and its tributaries” is important to our work at Wilmot. So much so, our founder currently sits on their Board of Directors. We are so grateful for their commitment to our local waterways and can’t wait to volunteer again.

Join Wilmot at the 2024 Dinner by the Bridge, the signature fundraiser for Greenways for Nashville. Held tomorrow, September 26, 2024 the event is celebrating 30 years of the non-profit’s work in Nashville and their work towards creating, preserving and promoting a system of greenways in Nashville and Davidson County.

Greenways are critical in connecting Nashvillians across the city and creating low-barrier access to the outdoors. A strong connected greenway system leads to lower emissions from cars as people opt to use the trails and more land preserved from development.

Their dedication to prioritizing community recreation spaces and land conservation has led to immeasurable benefits to the city and Nashvillians.

Celebrate Stormwater Awareness Week the morning of Friday, September 27th from 9-noon by cleaning up Sevenmile Creek! Meet up with Metro Water Services and the Cumberland River Compact to help revitalize the impaired waterway. Sevenmile Creek faces nutrient and sediment overload, E.coli, low oxygen levels, and litter. Volunteers will work in and around the creek to remove as much trash as possible, ranging from bottles and bags to bikes and tires. At February’s cleanup, volunteers removed over 2,600 pounds of litter, so come down and make an impact on water quality for all of Nashville. Sign up and show up— CRC will give you gloves, trash bags, and guidance. Check out the link in bio to find out more!

Wilmot toured Middle Tennessee’s very own glass recycling plant in Ashland City. Strategic Materials Inc., (SMI) has been recycling glass outside of Nashville for decades. While we work on reducing waste in our city, it is crucial to find a home for all the of materials we produce and divert them from the landfill. At SMI, they take everything from mixed glass bottles to car windshields. Thanks to their team for showing us around!

Happy Earth Day from Wilmot Inc!

These images, skillfully captured by Wilmot team members while working at Centennial Park's Earth Day event and elsewhere in Nashville, Canada, France, and Mexico, vividly illustrate the complex waste stream challenges we face on a global scale. From overflowing landfills to the proliferation of single-use plastics, the photographs serve as a powerful reminder of the urgent need for innovative waste management solutions. One example is the sidewalk waste compactor (below), a clever device designed to optimize space and reduce the volume of collected materials in urban environments. At Wilmot, we actively seek out projects which allow us to implement cutting-edge strategies and technologies to tackle this pressing issue head-on. By reusing construction materials, implementing composting systems, advocating for the ban of single-use plastics, and other strategies, we strive to create a more sustainable future for generations to come.

We firmly believe that every individual has the power to contribute to a sustainable path forward, and getting involved in your local community is an excellent way to make a positive impact. Whether you are passionate about reducing waste, promoting renewable energy, or preserving biodiversity, there are countless opportunities to make a difference. In Nashville, several remarkable organizations welcome volunteers who are eager to contribute to the cause of sustainability:

Urban Green Lab
Cumberland River Compact
Nashville Youth Climate Program
SPEAR
Tennessee Recycling Coalition

No effort is too small. Thank you for playing your part in cleaning up our future!

Wilmot is thrilled to announce that Nashville has been selected as one of 25 Bloomberg American Sustainable Cities (BASC), a three-year initiative launched in March of 2024! The program supports cities in accessing federal funds from the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) and the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL) to develop sustainably in the building and transportation sectors. BASC focusses particularly on disadvantaged communities, those that historically face chronic underinvestment and pollution burdens.

"This is about building a better future together. We're excited to dream and act to build healthier, wealthier communities," Mayor Freddie O'Connell commented on the program. "We'll be deeply engaging with communities across Nashville that have had chronic underinvestment, helping them shape their own futures to make them more affordable, healthier, and sustainable."

Federal IRA and BIL programs invest in climate solutions and environmental justice, boost clean energy jobs, bring down energy costs, and invest in infrastructure resilience to climate change. These investments will help ensure the US lowers greenhouse gas emissions 40% by 2030, compared to 2005 levels.

In their BASC application, Nashville proposed a residential clean energy initiative that also trains and supports Nashville's Black communities for jobs and business ownership in clean energy. Additionally, the program encourages investments in projects like affordable energy-efficient housing, electric vehicles and related infrastructure. Wilmot is excited to help put this funding to work around Nashville!
