The elephant matriarch brings something invaluable to the herd:
Memory.
She remembers where resources can be found.
She recognizes danger.
And her experience helps guide the herd through difficult conditions.

Leaders play a similar role.

When deadlines, meetings, and daily problems consume everyone's attention, it's easy for people to become very busy doing the work while gradually losing sight of why the work matters.

Sometimes the leader’s job is simply to remind everyone:
This is where we’re going. And this is why it matters.

🐘 Sometimes leaders see potential before people see it in themselves.

Developing people isn’t always about formal training.
Sometimes it means saying:
“I think you’re ready for this.”
“I’d like your opinion.”
“Why don’t you take the lead?”
“I know that didn’t go as planned. What did you learn?”

Those moments can change how someone sees their own capabilities.

Like young elephants learning from experienced members of the herd, people grow when someone is willing to walk alongside them while they learn.

Young elephants learn by living within the herd.
They observe. They imitate. And they learn from the experience of older members around them.

People grow in much the same way.
They need opportunities to stretch, people willing to guide them, and encouragement when they stumble.

As a leader, ask yourself:
Who on my team needs an opportunity to grow?
Give someone a new responsibility.
Invite them into a conversation.
Ask for their perspective.
Give them room to learn.

Holding a team together doesn’t always require a big team-building event.
Sometimes it’s:
A five-minute check-in.
A sincere thank-you.
Recognition for a job well done.
Or simply taking time to listen.

Those small moments communicate something important:
I see you. You matter. You’re an important part of this team.
Don’t underestimate the leadership power of an intentional conversation.

The herd stays together. The vulnerable are protected. And when it’s time to move, they move as a group.

This month, the lion reminded us that one of the strongest leadership habits isn't working harder...

It's knowing when to pause.

Together we've explored that:
✅ Rest is preparation—not weakness.
✅ Recovery is part of high performance.
✅ Strong relationships build resilient leaders.
✅ Sustainable leadership requires intentional rhythms.
✅ Burnout is often preventable—not inevitable.

As July comes to a close, I'm going to take my own advice.

During August, I'll be taking a short pause from my monthly newsletter and regular LinkedIn series to spend time with family, enjoy God's creation, recharge, and prepare for the next stage of the Wild Wisdom™ Leadership Journey.

Business doesn't stop—and neither does the journey.
