The Power of Respect in the Modern Workplace

In today’s fast-paced and diverse workplace, respect is more crucial than ever. It goes beyond simple politeness—it’s about recognizing and valuing the intrinsic worth of each individual.

Respect fuels enthusiasm and engagement. When employees feel respected, they are more motivated and invested in their work. Harvard Business School’s Francesca Gino notes, "Respect...fuels enthusiasm, fosters openness to sharing information and learning from one another, and motivates people to embrace new opportunities for working together."

Respect also enhances communication and collaboration. In a respectful workplace, individuals feel safe to express their ideas, ask questions, and provide feedback. This open communication leads to better decision-making and problem-solving.

Moreover, respect promotes inclusivity and diversity. Respecting different cultures, backgrounds, and perspectives is vital for creating an inclusive environment where everyone feels valued. This inclusivity attracts and retains top talent.

Finally, respect supports employee well-being. A respectful workplace reduces stress, improves mental health, and fosters a positive atmosphere, leading to higher job satisfaction and loyalty.

At FocusWorks, we know that respect can transform your workplace culture. Our Ntrinsx social intelligence tool and curriculum are designed to help leaders and teams foster a culture of respect.

Understanding the True Meaning of Respect in the Workplace
Respect is more than just politeness—it's about truly recognizing and valuing the intrinsic worth of each individual. At its core, respect means appreciating people for who they are and treating them with dignity and consideration.

Bob Hill, founder of Ntrinsx, defines respect as "making an effort to understand and relate to the intrinsic values of someone you care about." This highlights the importance of empathy and genuine interest in others' values and experiences. Respect fosters trust, openness, and mutual support, creating an environment where individuals feel valued and heard.

How do you practice respect in your workplace? Let’s start a conversation!

At FocusWorks, we believe that fostering a culture of respect is crucial for building strong, cohesive teams. That’s why we offer the Ntrinsx social intelligence tool and a comprehensive curriculum designed to help leaders and teams understand and relate to each other's intrinsic values.

“R-E-S-P-E-C-T. Find Out What It Means to Me” – Aretha Franklin

What exactly does respect mean to you, your company, and your employees? In today’s crowded, competitive marketplace, it can mean everything. As a leader, showing and receiving the proper respect, to clients, vendors, and team members alike, can be the key that unlocks the real potential of your business.

Everyone deserves respect. We don’t always have to agree but learning to disagree civilly can lead to constructive discussions that bring better solutions. Disputes naturally arise out of situations where there is misunderstanding, and that can quickly become distrust. Left to fester, that combination can seriously disrupt a workplace and lead to a loss of productivity and a big drop in morale among the team. Studies have shown that 88% of job seekers single out a healthy work environment as one of their key requirements for success, and 86% of those said that a company’s bad reputation in that area would keep them away.

At the end of the day, it’s the leader’s job to be proactive in fostering the kind of cooperation that builds a happy and productive workforce and a culture of respect in your organization. This is where FocusWorks’ executive and group training can make a major impact on your success.

At FocusWorks, we specialize in developing people and organizations through strategically targeted and customizable training programs, seminars, and interactive workshops designed to break down barriers and build a powerful culture of respect. We work with you to put systems in place to ensure that each of your team members is valued for their unique contributions.

We are certified in the use of Ntrinsx, a powerful tool that will help you understand your values and the values of others. You will learn how to interpret your results and begin to relate to the temperament of those you engage with in the business. You and your team will gain new respect for coworkers and be equipped with a natural process that will instill respect, based on understanding, within the culture of your organization.

Did you know the United States workforce is more disengaged than any other country?

Recently during the webinar presented by the Gallup Research group, they presented some of the reasons 80% of the workforce is disengaged and stated we have a long way to go to fixing the world's broken workplace. Some of the disengaged factors were 40% of people communicated they don’t have the materials and resources to do their jobs effectively.

In addition, 50% of the workforce said they didn’t know what was expected of them at the workplace. Today workers don’t have clear role expectations in their jobs.

Finally, many employees stated not having a friend at work is a huge factor in disengagement. Younger workers and remote workers are experiencing a higher level of loneliness than any other generation. People join companies but why do they stay? They stay because of the people they work with whereas they will quit a bad manager.

If we would lead the workforce like some of the overperforming companies such as Southwest Airline, KinderCare Child Care, and Etsy, we could lead and build a workplace that promotes work-life balance at work and help bring down the world’s stress, the world’s anger and the world’s sadness in remarkable ways.

Engagement in the Workforce
Define It!
What does disengagement look like in your organization?

(DISPWE):
• Define It
• Identify It /Locate It
• Seek It - Feedback & Options
• Plan It
• Work It - Implement
• Evaluate It - Celebrate progress and repeat

For June, we will delve deeper into employee disengagement in the workplace.
Being engaged at work can look different in various work environments, but the reality is that it occurs when someone is not performing optimally. It may look like increased absenteeism, isolation at work, not participating in activities, missing deadlines, violating work rules, complaining, increased conflict and many other patterns that take away from high productivity levels. Have you ever had a meeting at work, and we all know that there are issues brewing, but no one in the meeting says a word when given an opportunity? Please share times like this have impacted you and/or your organization in profitability or productivity.

Global employee disengagement cost the economy $8.9 trillion last year according to a Gallup survey.

According to the Gallup poll the decline in clarity of expectation since 2020 could be related to several changes in the U.S. workforce:
• Employee turnover during the great resignation led to restructuring of teams with less familiarity with one another -- 51% of managers tell Gallup that restructuring of teams has been a major complication post-pandemic. Layoffs, budget cuts and staffing challenges have likely contributed to this.
• 64% of managers report that employees now have additional job responsibilities. And many report that customer expectations have changed to demand a more immediate digital experience.

• Importantly, 70% of managers report to Gallup that they have had no formal training in how to lead a hybrid team.

May is mental health awareness:

Unalleviated mental health issues pose significant risks for employers’ bottom lines because experts say that individuals with mental health challenges tend to be less productive, unmotivated, and more likely to seek new employment.

Also, not having organizational behaviors that support mental health can impact the employee. For instance, if taking time off is not easy or judged, this can decrease employees’ desire to take time off, even though that could benefit their overall mental health and wellness.

For example, nearly 45 percent of workers said they are burned out from their jobs. They are nearly three times more likely to be actively searching for another job than those who aren’t depleted, according to SHRM’s Employee Mental Health in 2024 Research Series, which surveyed about 1,400 workers online earlier this year. Only 40 percent of burned-out workers go beyond expectations in their roles, compared to 56 percent of those who don’t feel used up from their jobs.

“Workers who are stressed are not bringing their best selves to work, nor are they working to their full potential or pushing themselves,” Jalil says. “How these workers who are burned out approach their work can spill over to their team members, as well—co-workers may have to pick up extra work, which can potentially foster some resentment in a team.”

Mental Health in the Workplace - Mental Health Disorders and Stress Affect Working-Age Americans

As Mental Health Awareness Month, May is a time to raise awareness of and reduce the stigma surrounding behavioral health issues, as well as highlight how mental illness and addiction can affect all of us – patients, providers, families, and our society at large.

Mental health disorders are among the most burdensome health concerns in the United States. Nearly 1 in 5 US adults aged 18 or older (18.3% or 44.7 million people) reported any mental illness in 2016.2 In addition, 71% of adults reported at least one symptom of stress, such as a headache or feeling overwhelmed or anxious.

Many people with mental health disorders also need care for other physical health conditions, including heart disease, diabetes, respiratory illness, and disorders that affect muscles, bones, and joints. The costs for treating people with both mental health disorders and other physical conditions are 2 to 3 times higher than for those without co-occurring illnesses. By combining medical and behavioral healthcare services, the United States could save $37.6 billion to $67.8 billion a year.

About 63% of Americans are part of the US labor force. The workplace can be a key location for activities designed to improve well-being among adults. Workplace wellness programs can identify those at risk connect them to treatment and put in place supports to help people reduce and manage stress. By addressing mental health issues in the workplace, employers can reduce healthcare costs for their businesses and employees.
