Over the last year I have had to be reminded that we can't plan birth! I cannot control the outcome of birth. As a doula, I feel like I need to save my clients from certain situations but, in the end, I can't. Birth will happen how and when it is supposed to happen. Sometimes birth needs medical help, and that's ok. Sometimes I can't be in the room with my clients, and that's ok. I will still find a way to support them.

A quote I read from a wonderful book called "Birth Without Fear" says "prepare and prepare some more. Then, surrender to the journey." That is exactly what I help my clients do; Prepare for the birth they desire but, be flexible.

I've had the privilege of witnessing the love and selflessness of new mothers. Watching them know when to make the right decision for their baby, I got to see how mothers continue to put their children first.

Did this last year make me have to stop and ask myself why I became a doula and if I wanted to continue? Sure did! It was an emotional year.
Do I want to continue to be a doula and support women? Of course! No matter what direction birth takes, if you want me there, I'll be there! I'll continue to sit with my clients through whatever situation arises because that is what doulas do! Not only do we provide physical support but also emotional and educational support. We help you navigate through whatever birth you have and hope that, in the end, you walk away feeling empowered.

I think every mother should read this.
I am 3 years postpartum and I got so much out of this book!
I don't care if you are trying to get pregnant, pregnant, 1 week postpartum or 10 years postpartum. There is something in this book for you.

I love how it talks about supporting other women where they are in their journey.

Let's stop comparing our journey through motherhood to others. Let's learn to love and enjoy our unique journey ❤

Our doulas aren’t letting this quarantine slow them down—Mary Poe, St. Louis Doula is pursuing her childbirth education certification, meanwhile Hollie completed her VBAC (vaginal birth after cesarean) doula certification through The VBAC Link. Congratulations!! We’re so excited about all the ways we will continue to collectively serve expecting families through this continuing education.
