🍠 Carbs have gotten a bad reputation over the years, but the truth is your body was designed to use them.

Healthy carbohydrates provide the fuel your body needs to power through daily life. Your brain relies heavily on glucose for focus, memory, and mood. Your muscles use carbohydrates during exercise and recovery. Even your hormones depend on adequate carbohydrate intake to support healthy thyroid function, stress resilience, and reproductive health.

Not eating enough quality carbs can sometimes leave you feeling tired, irritable, craving sugar, struggling with workouts, or even having trouble sleeping. In fact, carbohydrates help support the production of serotonin and melatonin, two important compounds involved in relaxation and restful sleep.

Nobody talks about this during prenatal appointments. And honestly, it’s one of the first things I will cover with my clients once I finish up with my Doula Certification.

We spend so much energy on what we eat during pregnancy, organic produce, prenatal vitamins, filtered water, and then drink that water out of a plastic bottle. Heat up food in a plastic container. Accept an IV at the hospital without a second thought. And nobody says a word.

🔬A University of New Mexico study tested 62 human placentas. Microplastics were found in all 62. Every single one. The most common polymer? 👉🏻Polyethylene, the same plastic used to make water bottles and plastic bags.

The placenta only starts forming about a month into pregnancy, which means it accumulates what took your other organs a lifetime to collect, in just 8 months. That’s a lot!

And it’s not just what we eat and drink out of. Let’s talk about things we don’t question enough:
🔸 Plastic water bottles — especially when left in a hot car or reused repeatedly. Heat drives plastic chemicals directly into what you’re drinking.
🔸 Plastic and styrofoam food containers — microwave them once and you’ve just spiked your meal with endocrine-disrupting compounds. Same goes for eating takeout that came in styrofoam.
🔸 Coffee cups — most paper coffee cups are lined with plastic. That hot liquid is pulling chemicals right into your drink.
🔸 IV bags at the hospital — roughly 70% of IV bags and tubing used in U.S. hospitals contain DEHP, a phthalate classified as an endocrine disruptor and linked to reproductive harm, preterm birth, and developmental issues. Research has linked DEHP and similar phthalate exposure to an estimated 2 million preterm births and around 74,000 newborn deaths in a single year.
Getting an IV when you truly need it during pregnancy is absolutely the right call, being sick while pregnant is its own kind of hard. But it’s worth knowing this, asking your hospital if DEHP-free options are available, and not opting in for anything unnecessary.
🔸 Plastic wrap on produce, plastic cutting boards, plastic utensils, small exposures that add up daily.

🤰🏻But why does this matter so much during pregnancy specifically? Because the placenta is one of the most absorptive organs in the human body. It’s designed to pull in nutrients and pass them to your baby. But it doesn’t discriminate perfectly. Microplastics and the chemicals they carry (phthalates, BPA, DEHP) are endocrine disruptors. They mimic and interfere with hormones.

In a developing baby, whose entire system is being built on hormonal signals, that interference matters deeply. Research has also found microplastics in fetal meconium, amniotic fluid, and even fetal organs, including the heart and liver.

Beyond pregnancy, these same plasticizers are tied to declining fertility in both men and women, ovarian dysfunction, endometriosis, and harder postpartum recovery because your body is working overtime to clear what it’s been storing.

Remeber this is never about fear. It’s about making informed swaps before and during pregnancy:
🔸Glass or stainless steel water bottles.
🔸Glass food storage.
🔸Avoid microwaving anything in plastic, ever.
🔸Ask questions at your hospital.
🔸Read labels on personal care products and look for phthalate-free options.

Your body is incredible at healing and protecting, it just needs us to stop adding to its burden.

As a Certified Holistic Health Practitioner I love to study Chinese medicine because it gives us the whole picture to the body. And I feel like this is a conversation women deserve to have.

🪴Let’s talk about hormonal birth control, from a Traditional Chinese Medicine lens.

Here’s how it works: hormonal birth control increases progesterone in the body, the same hormone elevated during pregnancy. This essentially “tricks” the body into thinking it’s already pregnant so a fertilized egg can’t implant.

This is a natural occurance in the body that we are chemically falsifying each month and that has repercussions…

When the body is in this false “pregnant mode,” it’s in growth mode. And if it’s not growing a baby, TCM practitioners are observing it grow other things, cysts, tumors, fibroids.

In TCM, every substance has a “nature.”
•Pharmaceuticals carry a drying quality, particularly affecting the kidneys, liver, and intestines. (Western medicine acknowledges this too, it’s why doctors always say “drink more water” while on medications, and why constipation is one of the most common pharmaceutical side effects.)

♻️Hormonal birth control also suppresses your body’s natural rhythms, including your period, which is your body’s built-in cleansing cycle. When that process is disrupted month after month, year after year, the consequences add up.

Holistic Practitioners and western medicines doctors alike have seen an increase in reports of infertility, PCOS, and cervical issues, and the signs keep pointing back to long-term hormonal birth control use.

Women deserve to know there are other options:
🌸Condoms
🌸The rhythm method
🌸Fertility-tracking apps like Natural Cycles
🌸Good old-fashioned calendar awareness

We are only fertile for about one week per month. Get to know your body’s natural rhythms.

… the celebrations are over, the rain has been pouring all day, routines feel off, energy feels low, and many of us are trying to get back into the swing of things after a weekend of extra food, drinks, travel, late nights, or simply being out of our normal routine. 🌧️

Instead of being hard on yourself this week, try giving yourself just 15 intentional minutes to reset.

15 minutes could look like:
✨ Going for a walk when the rain lets up
✨ Stretching or breathwork
✨ Drinking water and making a nourishing meal
✨ Sitting in silence instead of scrolling
✨ Reading, journaling, praying, or meditating
✨ Booking a sauna, detox, massage, or wellness session
