Nehawka Vol. Fire Department

Nehawka Vol. Fire Department Fire Protection The Nehawka Rural Fire District was formed in 1948. The District's budget for the 1992-1993 year was just over $13,000.

Thanks to Ivan Hansen that had served 43 years on the Rural Board and for collecting signatures to form the district. The district is known as both the Oldest and Smallest rural fire district in the state of Nebraska. The district covered 42 1/2 square miles of cass county and over 11 1/2 square miles in Otoe County for a total of over 54 square miles. Hansen recalls that the district operated on

some old, used equipment over the years -- much different than some of the equipped trucks and modern equipment that is used now. The district was housed in the old Nehawka Auditorium for many years. That building was destroyed by a fire in the late 1970's. A former repair shop just south of the railroad tracks in Nehawka was purchased for the new headquarters after the fire. In 1991, Fire District President Joe Sparks presented a plaque to Ivan Hansen for his dedicated, continuous 43 years of service. In 1993 the fire district headquarters was then moved to the east side of town where it is currently at to this day.
