Posoh Mip 💚

Another perennial plant relative you can find in our beautiful forest right now is the Large-flowered Bellwort. This is a mid to late spring pollinator that attracts several types of bees, insects and animals. Bellwort likes shaded wooded areas with pine needle mulch. The lifespan lasts 2-3 weeks. The Menomini used Bellwort for swellings and snake bites.

"The Menomini name for this is unknown to my informant, who, however, knew that it was used by the Menomini to reduce swellings."

Want to know why Chaga Mushroom was so sacred to the Menomini People?? Read below.

I will be at the Menominee Casino Resort for the craft fair tomorrow May 23rd from 9-1130am and from 2-5pm. Get some Chaga Tea while it's still available! Tinctures will be available to buy soon.
I have bigger jars this - $15.00 a jar.

Chaga Mushroom is a birch tree fungus that grows in cold northern climates. It looks like a black wooden conk or growth. In the realm of mushrooms, it is considered a dark, dense, mass of mycelium untypical from the usual cap and stem structure. When broken open, it has a soft brown core. The brown and the black areas are considered the medicine.

Long long ago, Chaga was acknowledged by the Menomini people as being a lifesaving food source after the glaciers slowly came down from Canada and the plants and animals left. As the glaciers melted and receeded from Wisconsin, It played a huge part in the survival of the Menomini. Its rich lifesaving properties was medicine for the Menomini people at a time that animals and plants weren't as abundant as they are now. Chaga was stored intentionally by the Menomini along the Ice Age Trail in case travelers, Menomini or not, needed that rejuvenating boost for their bodies. Chaga's slow burning properties have also been used by the Menomini to carry fire while traveling.

Northern Canadian tribes nicknamed this fungus “The Gift of God” due to its many uses and its intense medicinal properties. It was used in divination ceremonies where two lines of powdered Chaga were set on fire at the same time, symbolizing two paths in life. Whichever line burned faster was the lifepath you were destined to take. Many countries, nations, and cultures around the world acknowledge Chaga for the great things it can do for our bodies.

Chaga should only be harvested in the cold winter months to avoid harming the vitality of the tree; January thru March.

Add a couple spoonsful of this tea to your morning coffee or add lemon and cold water and chill for iced tea. The tea can also be added to boiling water and steep for Hot Chaga Tea.

Chaga is known to be a strong medicine. It is highly effective for digestive health so it should be used carefully and respectfully. Its important to take breaks between periods of use. Use it 2-3 times a week and it will do wonders.

Chaga has so many wonderful health benefits:

✨️boosts immune system ✨low calorie, high fiber, and ️loaded with antioxidants ✨️reduces inflammation ✨️reduces stress ✨good for heart health ✨️prevents and slows cancer cell growth ✨️lowers blood sugar ✨lowers cholesterol ✨Melanin for skin health

Please consult your doctor before implementing into your diet while taking blood-thinning medications. Due to its impact on blood sugar, this could potentially cause risks for people on diabetes treatments.

I wanted to shine a special spotlight on this beautiful perennial since we have been blessed by her presence the last couple of weeks. This is the Large-flowered Trillium. One thing to note regarding the Trillium is that it turns a purplish or pink color as it ages.

"The Bear is fond of the root. This root is used to reduce the swelling of the eye. The raw root is grated and applied as poultice to the eye. For cramps it is grated, steeped, and drunk as tea."

In honor of Mother's Day, I would like to share a story that was passed down to my dad by his elders.

Happy Mother's Day to All Who Bring Life ❤ Here is a Wolf Clan Teaching:

Oral Story of the Birth of the Menominee Forest

The Menominee Forest is best described from the words passed down, as the story within a story. A memory, alive within the Earth and told once again.
The ancestors of the white pine tell us of the birth and breakup of Turtle Island. The single landmass breaking in two as balance for Grandmother Earth; the seeds of life within each.
In time, the pine nation needed Napenoh Pemecwan, the self-similar nature within nature to survive. The birth of maple nation is found within the pine cone. This birth diversified and balanced Grandmother Earth once again. Listen to the plants, as they tell us this story.
Water is the mother of all life. The mother first appeared to the nations in the form of ice. The nations watched in awe as giant sheets of ice appeared. Riding in upon the ice were the ancient forests of the yew and spruce; insulation from the brutal cold. The pine nation was adapted to survive from the early ages of Turtle Island. With the help of the spruce and yew, the white pine nation remained.
The maple were adapted to survive, but the plants of their community were not. The maples had responsibility to their community and with great sadness moved south away from the ice. This caused great hardship for the pine nation and the Menominee people. With hardship came disease, the spruce and yew nation offered its powerful medicines to the pine and Menominee nations.
The Menominee stories tell of a great change in the wind signaling the return of maple nation. With great melting, Grandmother Earth was flush with water. From that point forward the three nations were one.
