What makes a successful retirement? For Sandra, it's about feeling financially prepared, spending time with family, and having the freedom to enjoy everyday life. Retirement success isn't just about how much money you've saved, but what that money allows you to do.

You've spent decades saving for retirement.

But once you retire, will you feel comfortable spending some of that money?

One person told me he'd started loosening up on withdrawals from his retirement accounts.

He was also thinking carefully about Medicare costs and how additional withdrawals might affect his premiums.

That's a real retirement planning challenge. You want to be thoughtful about taxes and expenses, but you also saved that money for a reason.

The goal isn't necessarily to spend as little as possible or to finish retirement with the biggest account balance.

It's to understand what you can reasonably afford, account for the costs, and make decisions that support the life you want.

I share Bob's response and three other retirees' perspectives in the latest Retire Today podcast.

How do you define a successful retirement?

Is $1 million enough to retire? What about $2 million—or even $10 million? One client's retirement savings goal kept moving, and this experience isn't unique. Why is reaching a particular dollar not necessarily the best measure of retirement readiness? Learn more in this week's episode of "Retire Today": https://youtu.be/3d-UkxVg2EM

You might have $1 million saved for retirement. Or $2 million. Or $10 million.

But what is that money supposed to accomplish?

I recently asked Retire Today listeners to describe a successful retirement.

One listener had a specific savings target. Another was learning to feel more comfortable spending his savings. A third had spent decades planning for retirement income, healthcare, and being debt-free.

And one described success as having financial confidence, spending time with family, going to church, participating in a book club, and exercising.

Those answers reminded me why retirement planning needs to begin with what you want your money to do.

Your account balance is important. But it doesn't tell the whole story.

If you have a retirement savings goal, try writing three things next to that number that you want your money to make possible.

What would make retirement feel successful to you?

You can spend years looking forward to retirement and everything you’ll finally have time to do. But when the excitement settles down, a different question can show up: “What if nobody calls me?” Arlene C. Nelson shares why preparing for retirement can mean thinking about your relationships, purpose, and fears—not just your money.

You can spend years preparing financially for retirement.

Then you retire and realize the money wasn't the only thing your job provided.

Arlene C. Nelson experienced that after 27 years with the same employer. Once work ended, so did much of the structure that had organized her days.

Eventually, she went back to school, volunteered, met new people, and developed new routines.

Her story is a good reminder to think about what your job provides besides the paycheck before you leave it.

Who do you regularly interact with because of work?
What gives your week structure?
Where do you get a sense of accomplishment?

Your financial plan can help you determine whether you're ready to retire. But it's also worth thinking about the life that plan is supposed to support.

Retirement can give you all the free time you wanted—but take away the structure that filled your days. Arlene C. Nelson shares how retiring single left her wondering, “Who am I now?” and how going back to school helped her begin finding direction and purpose again.

Before retirement, you're probably asking:
"Do I have enough money?"

But after you retire, you might find yourself asking:
"Do I have enough purpose?"

Arlene C. Nelson spent 27 years with her employer. After retiring, she suddenly found herself without the structure that had organized her days for decades.

She remembers thinking:
"Who am I now?"

Eventually, she began building something new through education, volunteering, relationships, and intentional routines.

Her experience is an important reminder:
Don't only plan what you're retiring from. Spend some time planning what you're retiring to.

Arlene joined me on Retire Today to share her retirement story and what she wishes more people—especially single retirees—would consider before leaving work.

An annuity shouldn't automatically be the answer just because one of its features sounds appealing. Jeremiah Konger explains some of the characteristics of someone who might not be a good fit for an annuity.

Should an annuity be part of your retirement?

Don't start by looking at an interest rate.

Don't start with a promise of income.

And don't start because someone told you annuities are either fantastic or terrible.

Start with your retirement plan.

What income do you need?

When do you need it?

How much liquidity do you want?

Which risks are you trying to address?

What other options could accomplish the same goal?

Jeremiah Konger joined me on Retire Today to explain why annuities are best evaluated as one potential planning tool—not as something every retiree should automatically buy or avoid.
