Cogongrass is a federally regulated noxious w**d. In fact, cogongrasss has been named one of the top 10 worst w**ds in the world! It was first introduced to the US in Louisiana 1912, and later used as a packaging material at the port of Mobile 1949. It spreads by seed and rhizomes (roots). The seed are mostly wind carried (check out the in-progress picture we caught!); however, the seed can be carried from site to site on equipment. Cogongrass is a threat to our native landscape species due to its ability to quickly become dense and crowd out the native species. In forests, cogongrass presents a higher fire risk. It is highly flammable, and burns hotter than normal vegetation. Contact us today to start your cognongrass management strategy!

Take a look at Chinese Wisteria(CW, wisteria sinensis) it’s VERY noticeable this time of year. CW was first introduced in 1916 as an ornamental plant, but has since been labeled as an invasive species. CW is usually seen as a twining woody vine (and always in a clockwise direction!) It produces lavender to purple flower clusters and produces a seed pod due to wisteria being part of the ”pea” family. The amount of successfully germinated peas(seeds) is what makes CW invasive.
