Gold edged higher on Monday, supported by a weaker U.S. dollar and bargain hunting after a sharp recent selloff. However, the metal’s recovery remained limited as rising government bond yields and elevated crude oil prices continued to weigh on sentiment, with the Iran conflict fueling inflation concerns and expectations of tighter monetary policy.

Data released Tuesday showed that the People’s Bank of China (PBOC) increased its gold holdings by 160,000 troy ounces in March, roughly 5 tons marking its largest monthly purchase in more than a year. Total gold reserves rose to 74.38 million fine troy ounces, up from 74.22 million ounces at the end of February.

The move comes at a volatile moment for the gold market. Bullion fell 12% in March, its worst monthly performance since 2008, as the Iran war drove investors toward the US dollar and prompted expectations that the Federal Reserve may be less likely to cut interest rates if inflation accelerates.

China’s central bank continued to add to its gold reserves in March, extending its buying streak to 17 consecutive months and signaling that official demand for bullion remains firm even as gold prices come under heavy pressure. Data released Tuesday showed that the People’s Bank of China (PBOC)...

Gold and silver opened April with a strong rebound, helped by a weaker U.S. dollar, lower bond yields, and renewed hopes that tensions in the U.S.-Iran war could eventually ease. But the bounce comes after one of the sharpest monthly sell-offs in precious metals in years, with gold posting its worst month in more than a decade and silver suffering its steepest monthly drop since 2011.

Central banks have reshaped global gold reserves in recent years.
Since 2020, China, Poland, and Türkiye rank among the largest buyers of gold, adding hundreds of tonnes to national reserves. China alone added about 357 tonnes over the period, while Poland added about 315 tonnes and Türkiye about 252 tonnes. India and Brazil also appear among the top buyers.

Many countries increased gold holdings as a response to currency risk and geopolitical uncertainty. Gold plays a role as a reserve asset outside the traditional financial system, which explains the steady accumulation by central banks across Asia, Eastern Europe, and the Middle East.

This Visual Capitalist infographic ranks the countries that increased or reduced gold reserves since 2020 and highlights how reserve strategies shift across the global monetary system.

In 2022, the Americas remained one of the world’s largest generators of electronic waste, reflecting both high consumption of electrical and electronic equipment and uneven systems for collection, recycling, and regulation. Within this regional picture, the United States stood out by a wide margin as the single largest generator of e-waste in the Americas. Its scale, high per capita generation, decentralized policy framework, and role in cross-border movements make it central to understanding the region’s e-waste landscape.
