Ben Weitsman of New Castle, a division of Upstate Shredding - Weitsman Recycling, the East Coast's largest privately held scrap metal processor, will open its brand new, state-of-the-art shredder and retail scrap yard in the Spring of 2016. With the addition of the New Castle facility, Upstate Shredding - Weitsman Recycling, will process more than one million tons of ferrous and three hundred million pounds of nonferrous in 2016. This location is one of seventeen, and is equipped with brand new buildings, equipment and scrap processing technology situated on a fully paved and landscaped yard. New Castle positions the company to further expand its feeder yard footprint into Western Pennsylvania and Eastern Ohio.

Know Your Metal: Brass or Copper?

Brass and copper can look similar after years of dirt, tarnish, or paint, but there’s an easy and quick way to tell which is which.

🟠 Copper usually shows a reddish-orange color when you lightly scratch a hidden spot. It’s often found in plumbing pipes, electrical wire, and tubing. Older copper may look dark brown or even green on the outside.

🟡 Brass usually reveals a yellow-gold color beneath the surface. Look for it in faucets, valves, fittings, handles, and decorative hardware.

A magnet won’t usually help here because brass and copper are both non-magnetic. When you’re unsure, keep the pieces separate and bring them to our New Castle yard. Our team can help identify what you’ve got.

🔒Strap your scrap!

Place heavier pieces at the bottom of your truck bed or trailer. Run a ratchet strap over the full load, attach it to secure anchor points, and tighten it firmly.

When leaving check the load to make sure nothing has shifted.

We want your scrap to reach CMI New Castle in the truck, rather than leaving a trail along the way.
