APPLE move today is most probably a mistake: the market is pricing a forecast, not demonstrated demand.
The numbers support the concern:
Fact Data
Duo starting price $1,999
1 TB $2,599
2 TB $3,199
Foldables’ current smartphone share 20% decline YoY
TrendForce’s assumed Duo sales ~5M units
Apple itself confirms the $1,999 starting price. More importantly, TrendForce says the entire foldable market is basically stagnant, with Android foldable shipments expected to fall more than 20% this year. Yet it simultaneously assumes Apple will sell ~5 million Duos.
So there is a legitimate bearish argument here:
Apple is entering a category that consumers have already had access to for ~7 years, that remains niche, at $1,999+, without introducing a fundamentally new use case. Samsung has been selling the concept since 2019.
Now it is true that Apple doesn’t need the average iPhone owner to want one. Even a very small percentage of affluent iPhone users could produce several million sales.
But we currently have zero actual Duo sales data. Preorders don’t even start until October 16.
Therefore, today’s +3% cannot reasonably be interpreted as evidence that customers like the Duo. It’s the market betting that they will.
And that’s testable very soon: if October preorder demand and subsequent channel data come in substantially below that ~5M-unit expectation, the current optimism would have to be revised. AppleStockX Investing.com. Stock Trading Setups and Methods for Profits. TradingView.
