A legacy gift should leave an impact, not unanswered questions.

If charitable giving is part of your future plans, having a conversation with your loved ones can help them understand your wishes before the time comes to carry them out.

It’s also important to plan for the unexpected. What happens if the organization you intended to support no longer exists? Including appropriate contingency language in your estate plans can help ensure your gift still supports a cause that reflects your intentions.

For nonprofits, there’s another question to consider: Are you prepared to have these conversations with your donors?

DAZA Development can help your organization think through donor education, legacy giving conversations, and how planned giving fits into your larger fundraising strategy.

Sometimes, thinking about your legacy starts with a change in life.

A marriage. A new grandchild. Retirement. Selling a longtime home. These moments can cause us to reflect on what matters most, what we want to leave behind, and the causes that have made a difference in our lives.

They can also be a natural opportunity to revisit your plans and consider whether they still reflect your priorities.

For nonprofits, recognizing these moments can open the door to thoughtful conversations with supporters about the impact they want to make for years to come.

Legacy giving isn’t just about finances. It’s about what matters to someone and how they want that impact to continue.

That’s part of it, but it’s not the whole picture.

Planned giving can take many forms, and it isn’t reserved for wealthy donors. At its core, it’s about being intentional with your resources and thinking about how the organizations and causes you care about can become part of your legacy.

For nonprofits, that means we shouldn’t assume our supporters already know these opportunities exist. Sometimes, the first step is simply starting the conversation.

Does your organization talk to donors about planned giving?

Successful nonprofits don't just work hard.

- They build strong systems.
- They invest in relationships.
- They plan before they grow.
- They tell authentic stories.

And they understand that strategy is just as important as passion.

That's how missions become sustainable.

One of the quickest ways to weaken a grant proposal is treating the budget like the final box to check.

The way your organization takes the time to build a budget will reflect on your abilities to run a nonprofit. Funders can tell when a budget was rushed and quickly put together. They can also tell when time and details were poured into a budget.

As you start to build and write out your proposal, you should also be building your budget based on that plan. Never wait until last minute, you may not think anyone will notice, but trust us, they will.

We get it; success can be exciting! You start to see more grants awarded, you get connected with donors, and more volunteers want to help.

You will be tempted to increase the work and to do more. But remember your long-term goal is to be sustainable. Your organization needs to take time to evaluate during times of growth, "Can we keep up with this growth?"

Sometimes the smartest move you can make isn't adding another program; rather, it's strengthening the ones you already have.

Large donations are not given because they had lunch once with a board member.

Trust is built over time, and they invest because of the effort that was taken to build an authentic relationship between them and the organization.

It's important to listen - follow up - connect with their stories - stay connected - and even long after the gift has been made, still say thank you.

A donation given is a result of a good relationship, not something that happens at the beginning.

Although AI can be used as a tool, it can't be a shortcut to a compelling grant proposal.

AI can be used to brainstorm, organize your thoughts, and even improve your grammar, but the heart of your mission has to be told in your own words. Funders can tell when applications are copied and pasted, feeling too generic. They're looking for authentic stories, measurable impact, and a deep understanding of the community you serve.

The strongest grant applications don't have to sound perfect, but they do need to sound genuine.

Over the next few weeks, we want to unpack the common mistakes we see made by nonprofits.

These are things that are overlooked or maybe not considered seriously enough.

🤖AI Can't replace authenticity
💲Donors aren't cashiers
📈Growing too fast
📊The budget isn't an attachment
