How much of your Development Plan is already in place? If grant funding is part of your organization's future, these are some of the questions you should be able to answer.

Your organization:
1. Is your organization grant ready?
2. Is your nonprofit status and state-required charitable registration in order?
3. Do you have your financial documents in order?
4. Do you have at least three years of Form 990s? An audit or financial compilation also can be helpful.
5. Is 100% of your board financially supporting your mission?

Your project:
6. Do you have a specific program or project you want funded?
7. Do you know how much it will cost, and have you written a budget?
8. Have you raised any money toward the program or project?
9. Is the program or project unique or responsive to a need in the community you serve?
10. Is it in line with your mission, or are you creating it simply to fit a grant opportunity?

Your plan:
11. Who will facilitate the program or project, and will they be compensated?
12. Do you have data to support the need in the community you serve?
13. What is the timeline, and how will you measure success?

Notice how many of these questions connect back to work we've already discussed throughout this series. That's because grant readiness isn't separate from development. It grows out of a strong Development Plan.

We've talked about year-end strategy, assessing your organization, setting goals, and stewarding your supporters. Now we're moving into another important piece of your Development Plan: grant readiness.

Before you hire a grant writer, there's an important question your organization needs to answer: Are you actually grant ready?

Having a great mission isn't enough. Funders want to understand what you're asking them to fund, why it's needed, what it will cost, who will carry it out, and how you'll measure success. Your organizational and financial documents also need to be in order.

A grant writer can help tell your story and build a strong proposal. But first, your organization needs to have the pieces of that story ready.

Year-end fundraising isn't only about asking for the next gift. It's also about making sure the people who already support your mission know how much they matter.

That's why donor stewardship belongs in your Development Plan. Building and maintaining strong donor relationships today can strengthen your fundraising opportunities tomorrow.

Think about handwritten notes, personalized letters, phone calls, impact updates, and meaningful thank-yous. And don't forget to get your board involved.

This plan is set in place even months before September because your year-end giving is a part of your organization's Development Plan. You will ask questions like, who needs to hear from you? What story do you want to tell? Will you reach supporters through a mailed appeal, email, personal conversations, or a combination of all three?

Over the next several weeks, we'll be sharing steps and questions to help you think through year-end giving, organizational goals, donor stewardship, grant readiness, and how all of these pieces work together.

A legacy gift should leave an impact, not unanswered questions.

If charitable giving is part of your future plans, having a conversation with your loved ones can help them understand your wishes before the time comes to carry them out.

It’s also important to plan for the unexpected. What happens if the organization you intended to support no longer exists? Including appropriate contingency language in your estate plans can help ensure your gift still supports a cause that reflects your intentions.

For nonprofits, there’s another question to consider: Are you prepared to have these conversations with your donors?
