Flying taxis are about to become a reality in the United States.
The US Department of Transportation and the FAA have approved eight electric air taxi programs to begin operating across 26 states, with the first flights expected as early as summer 2026. The initiative is part of the eVTOL Integration Pilot Program, created to accelerate the arrival of next-generation aircraft in American airspace.
Companies including Joby Aviation, Archer Aviation, Beta Technologies, and Wisk Aero are preparing to launch electric vertical takeoff and landing aircraft designed for fast, quiet trips over congested cities. A journey that might take an hour by road could be reduced to less than 15 minutes in the air.
Perhaps the most significant milestone is that these aircraft will be allowed to carry passengers and generate revenue before receiving full FAA type certification — an unprecedented move in US aviation history.
What once seemed like science fiction is now moving from testing grounds to everyday transportation.
The air taxi era has officially begun.
