I drive a lot of miles through the warmer months and see a lot of turtles in the road. Whenever it’s safe I stop to move them. First one of the year yesterday. Remember-always move them to the side they are going towards and if it’s a big snapping turtle, beware the long reach but don’t lift by the tail.

It’s that time of year…. I supply a few schools with hatching eggs and many of them want them the week after April vacation. So vacation week for me is all about storing g eggs properly and sorting them all by date.

The smell of love is in the air. Skunk love that is! I smelled 2 Monday night and have skunk tracks all through my yard. This is their breeding season and the males are on the move looking for females. The males may fight so you may be smelling them a couple times a week in the neighborhood. If you have a female living in your yard the smell may be strong every single night as she rejects unwanted males or multiple males fight over her. If you smell it here and there that will end in a few weeks and is best just lived with. If you have a female under the house or garage and it’s non stop and unbearable that’s about the only time I recommend that I come remove them.

This is a female ring necked pheasant that was brought to me this week. They are a special case-there is an open hunting season on them but they are not native and rarely reproduce in Maine. They are raised and released for people to hunt. Any that survive the season are pretty well equipped for our climate but they are farm raised and don’t do well finding food in deep snow so many don’t survive unless they hang around farms or bird feeders. This one was starving and dehydrated but is doing great now! She will soon be moved to an outdoor enclosure and in the spring can choose to stay or head back out into the wild.

Happy Monday! It’s not all snuggles and fun with all these animals. Today is like panning for gold only it’s insects. Sorting the mealworm colonies.
