While Aropa celebrated Friday 11/29 out of the office with family and friends after Thanksgiving, we also celebrated Native American Heritage Day! Native Heritage Day is observed as a federal holiday and always takes place on the Friday after Thanksgiving.

Aropa is proud to celebrate Native American Heritage Day! We acknowledge that the United States was founded on land traditionally belonging to Native people, and we are always in pursuit of educating ourselves about the history of these tribes and their contribution to our country’s rich culture.

As many Americans spend Thursday gathering with friends and family for Thanksgiving celebrations, we acknowledge that for many Native people, this is a time for remembrance. Cheyenne, a consultant for Aropa and a member of the Yaqui tribe, reminds us that Native American Heritage Day is about celebrating community: “It’s a time of remembrance for our fallen family and those who suffered the indigenous genocide. […During this time,] we embrace our culture, take up space, and ground ourselves to be closer to Creator, as a reminder that we overcame the erasure of our people and are still standing earth side to prove it.”

New Haven was built primarily on the land of the Quinnipiac people, a tribe whose name translates to “Long-water people”. Their language went extinct near the end of the 19th century, and the tribe was forced off of their land and onto the nation’s first reservation in 1638. Today, Connecticut is home to nearly 700 Native groups as identified by the 2020 U.S. Census.
