🚨 Fire Prevention Week is HERE! (October 4–10, 2026) 🚨

​The New Haven Fire Department is proud to team up with the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) for this year's official campaign: "Charge into Fire Safety™: Safe Charging Is a Superpower!"

​From cell phones and laptops to e-bikes and power tools, rechargeable lithium-ion batteries power our daily lives. But when they are misused, damaged, or improperly charged, they can become a serious fire hazard.

​💪 Activate your charging superpowers with these simple tips:
​Use the right gear: Always use the charger and cord that came with your device (or one approved by the manufacturer).

​Hard surfaces only: Charge devices on a hard, flat surface like a table or desk—never on a bed, couch, or under a pillow.

​Don't overcharge: Unplug your devices once they are fully charged.

​Charge large items outside: Power tools, e-bikes, and scooters should be charged outdoors when possible, making sure they never block exits.

​Watch for warning signs: Stop using a device immediately if it feels excessively hot, starts swelling, smells strange, leaks, or makes popping sounds.

🔥 IMPORTANT REMINDER: FALL BURNING RESTRICTIONS IN EFFECT 🔥

​Starting October 1st, the West Virginia Fall Burning Law goes into effect through December 31st!

​Please help us keep our community and forests safe by following these state regulations:

​⏰ When can you burn?
​NO BURNING is permitted between 7:00 AM and 5:00 PM.
​Outdoor burning is only allowed from 5:00 PM to 7:00 AM.

​📋 Key Safety Rules to Follow:
​Stay with your fire: Fires must be attended at all times until fully extinguished.
​Clear the area: Clear down to bare mineral soil for a minimum perimeter of 10 feet around what is being burned.

​Watch the weather: Never burn on dry, windy days.
​Be prepared: Keep a water source and tools nearby to control the flame.

​⚠️ Know the Consequences:
​Violations carry fines up to $1,000.00.
​
If an unattended or improperly managed fire escapes, you are legally liable for the full cost of fighting the fire and any property damage it causes.

​Willfully setting fires is a felony punishable by fines and/or imprisonment.

​Help us prevent wildfires and protect our neighbors. If you see an emergency, dial 911 immediately. To report suspected arson, call the WV Arson Hotline at 1-800-233-FIRE.
