To those who suffer in silence….
I see you.
I see you leaning in, tilting your head so your “good ear” is closer to the sound.
I see you intently watching the conversations across the conference room table so you can read lips.
I see you laughing at the jokes you didn’t hear.
I see you smiling and nodding when you have no idea what that person just said to you.
I see you isolating yourself and not fully contributing to the conversation because you aren’t quite sure what was just said at the other end of the table.
I see you because I am one of you. I have been struggling with hearing loss for over twenty years in corporate America.
We are NOT alone: 12% of the workforce has some degree of hearing loss.
I no longer suffer in silence.
I let everyone know that I am hard of hearing, and you know what? People want to help, and they are happy to make accommodations to be more inclusive.
There is power in speaking up, in asking to be heard and in using technology to help you be more engaged in work with live captions and assistive listening devices.
There is power in letting your coworkers know that you struggle with hearing loss.
May is “Better Hearing and Speech Month.” Sounds like a perfect month to start raising awareness about hearing inclusion. Reach out today to set up a consultation and see how I can help at your workplace!
