No developer wants surprises halfway through a project.

Whether it's a former industrial property, an aging commercial site, or a vacant piece of land with redevelopment potential, understanding environmental conditions early can make all the difference.

Leaaf Environmental Co-Owner Jesse Hoppes recently shared his thoughts with Biz New Orleans Magazine on how environmental risk can be managed without bringing development to a standstill.

It's a practical look at why due diligence matters and how proactive planning can help projects move forward with greater confidence.

Big thanks to everyone who stopped by to say hello at the Louisiana Brownfields Conference hosted by the Louisiana Brownfields Association! !

We had a wonderful time connecting with so many passionate folks working to bring properties back into productive use across Louisiana, and the venue at The Queen in Baton Rouge made it even better.

Pictured: Jessica Rury and Jennifer Lindquist (and yes… Kerry Meaux managed to duck the photo like usual 😄).

Already looking forward to next time!

Before a property changes hands, it’s important to understand what might be hiding in its past.

Our team recently completed Phase I Environmental Site Assessments for multiple properties across Northern California, helping our client identify potential environmental risks before moving forward with acquisition and development decisions.

Phase I ESAs give buyers, lenders, and developers a clearer picture of a property’s history—from past uses to potential environmental concerns—so they can move forward with confidence.

If you’re evaluating a property and need reliable environmental due diligence, we’re always happy to help.

🔎 Take a look at the project:

Phase I Environmental Site Assessments in Northern California completed across 8,000+ acres, supporting due diligence and regulatory review.

For our February social, we hosted a Food Olympics featuring Italian foods and flavors.

Teams raced to match menus in a relay, transferred pistachios using nothing but a straw (no hands allowed), took on a blind taste test, and engineered the tallest freestanding breadstick tower they could manage.

There was debate. There was strategy. There were plenty of laughs.

We take pride in building a team that genuinely enjoys working together. Strong teams don’t just happen, they’re built with intention.

At Leaaf Environmental, LLC, we recently had the privilege of partnering with a major hospital campus in the New Orleans metro to provide comprehensive indoor air quality, asbestos, and mold consulting services—all while renovations were happening in occupied areas.

Chase Cromwell, P.G. was recently featured in the Louisiana Board of Professional Geoscientists' newsletter, recognizing the initiative he’s taken to support the next generation of geologists.

Chase has been working directly with geology students at local universities, starting with University of New Orleans, to talk about the importance of licensure and to walk them through the National Association of State Boards of Geology (ASBOG) exam process. He saw an opportunity to reach students while they’re still in school, when the timing, coursework, and momentum set them up for long-term success.

That effort is already making an impact. The Board has seen a noticeable increase in FG exam registrations over the last two testing cycles, particularly from UNO students. It’s a strong example of how individual initiative can strengthen the profession as a whole.

Well-earned recognition for Chase and meaningful work for the future of geology in Louisiana.
