Pre-Storm Advice:
1. Take photos of the exterior of your home from all sides, BEFORE, the storm arrives.
2. Email those photos to yourself or someone you trust. This will time stamp what your home looked like prior to any storm damage, as your insurance company should pay to restore your home to pre-storm condition.
3. After the storm hits and departs, take post storm photos of your home again, all sides like you did before. This will show damage to your yard, trees, fences and most importantly roof.
4. Gather all important documents BEFORE the storm arrives, including a copy of your Homeowner's Policy. Read it. Attempt to understand your coverages. Know how much coverage you have and don't spend too much on demo and gutting services. Always get a receipt. No tickee, No Money....
The advice I'm sharing will save you from the heartache of being underpaid for a legitimate claim and possibly keep you from being taken advantage of by storm chasers out to make a quick buck. I've worked in the post-storm remediation field since Hurricane Katrina and with a few easy precautions taken, you can have a better recovery, post hurricane.
