For those of you new at Home Schooling here are some tips:
Teaching your children HOW to learn is more important than teaching them what to learn.
A life long learner will do well in this world especially as more and more information that used to be memorized is instantly available online.
Teach children to think critically and they will do fine.
There is no rule that says learning must start at 7:50 am. Children are different. Some learn better later in the day. You have complete flexibility in educating your children. That means afternoons or evenings or weekends. And you don't need to do 6 hours a day.
Quality does beat quantity every time.
God never intended for kids to sit still for 6 hours. Take breaks, lots of them...go outside, do a field trip.
Let your children touch things and do things and not just listen to things. You can teach math through cooking, sewing, playing games and yes, boys SHOULD do all these things too.
There are plenty of board games out there that also teach things with a spoonful of sugar as we say.
Teach your children the love of reading. Textbooks and novels that our 12th grade English teachers forced us to read have killed kids for generations. Until a child learns that books can be amazing voyages a 20 pound biology book has no chance
ARTS ARTS ARTS!!!! A creative, imaginative mind is formed through playing an instrument, or drawing, or writing, or working with clay or playing with legos or minecraft etc. What better time to buy a keyboard or a musical instrument? (or heck, learn a language!). Youtube is filled with instructional videos too, so no excuses ,!
Speaking of Youtube, don't be afraid of TV or technology. There are amazing things available to watch. Instead of a Geography book pick 3 new places a week and watch a bunch of videos about their customs and their food and their land. A whole generation learned watching Sesame Street, Mr. Rogers and Schoolhouse Rock.
You will have bad days, so be patient! Teachers have bad days, parents have bad days and now you have both rolled into one. So take breaks!
Take a day off instead of yelling at your children and significant other. What do you think field trips are? (days off)....
Keep in mind, if nothing else, you won't do worse than the current public school system...!!!
