Leaders can get so locked in on the task that we forget the people doing the work.
So let me ask you this:
What are you doing—consistently—to show your team they matter?
Not with a quick “good job” in passing… but in how you lead, develop, and notice them.
Coach vs. Cheerleader: what’s the difference (and why it matters)?
A lot of leaders default to one style—usually the “cheerleader” energy—because it feels supportive. But leadership requires range.
A Cheerleader
Brings positivity and motivation
Lifts morale when things get heavy
Celebrates wins and keeps momentum going
A Coach
Studies performance and patterns
Builds skill, confidence, and decision-making
Gives feedback, refines strategy, and strengthens ex*****on
Helps people grow through challenges—not around them
And yes—great leaders do both.
But here’s the problem I see often:
The squeaky wheel gets the attention… and the steady ones get overlooked.
Sometimes the loudest person—most visible, most demanding, most “out there”—gets most of the leader’s time.
Meanwhile, the person who is steady, dependable, consistent, and low-maintenance quietly becomes invisible:
Not recognized
Not developed
Not affirmed
Not poured into
And over time? They disengage. Or they leave.
Because being “easy to manage” shouldn’t mean “easy to ignore.”
Real leadership is knowing who needs what—and when.
There are moments to hype your team up.
But if you only cheer and never coach, your team may feel encouraged… but still stuck.
Use your “Coach” role when you need:
Skill development
Stronger performance and accountability
Strategy to overcome complex problems
Long-term measurable growth
Use your “Cheerleader” role when you need:
Morale boosts during tough seasons
Emotional support
Celebration and reinforcement
Even strong leaders need support too. Sometimes we don’t need motivation—we need a better method, a stronger mindset, and a clear plan for leading people well.
