Can employees volunteer for the nonprofit that employs them? Sometimes, but the details matter.

Volunteer activities must differ from their paid duties, take place outside normal work hours, and be freely chosen without pressure or an expectation of compensation. The activity's purpose and whether it replaces paid staff also matter.

An employee's willingness to help does not automatically make the time unpaid.

Liability matters too. Anyone volunteering on your organization's behalf should go through the same background checks and due diligence you would require of a new hire.
