Celebrating Spring

I love the Spring season. Except for the others it’s my favorite. It’s a time for renewal. It’s a new beginning, a clean slate. After a long tough Winter who’s not ready for that? Daffodils and Tulips inspire me. The “peeping” of baby toads and the swelling of tree buds lift my spirits. Add in a surge of warmth and color and the stage is set for a veritable renaissance. All told the Spring season reminds me that the “best is yet to come”.

Sometimes, however, the best comes with a price. As Winter turns to Spring the clash of seasons stirs the atmosphere and the result can be storms and winds quite disturbing to our landscape. What’s more, the warmth of the sun awakens hungry insects who will feed on our trees and shrubs. That’s the bad news. The good news is that trees that are managed through pruning and thinning stand up to the winds and those that are fertilized or treated with systemic materials resist insect damage and grow strong and healthy.

For over four decades Mountain Tree Care has been in the vanguard of tree preservation. Whether it’s pruning, storm damage repair, or treatments such as deep root fertilizing, trunk injection or power spraying, we have the expertise to keep your trees thriving. Don’t let tree problems spoil the serenity of your home landscape.

Requiem for a Species

Once Spring kicks into high gear and we see cherry blossoms and forsythia coloring our landscape, sadly we will wonder why so many of our Ash trees are failing to leaf out. Though not the most important of our hardwoods, the Ash is a shade tree with several good features. There are many fine old specimen about and countless more gracing our hedgerows and roadways.

Accidently introduced into northeastern Ulster County years ago, the Emerald Ash Borer (E.A.B.) has been inflicting its damage underneath the bark of the Ash tree unseen by human eyes. As it feeds it quietly completes its life cycle and then moves on to lay hundreds of eggs infecting other Ash trees. Not many people are aware of this and before long there will only be a handful left.

A few of you took us up on our offer to treat your Ash trees and protect them from this deadly menace. Though the jury is still out on some, most of the trees that we treated are still thriving. The key to success, we’ve learned, is to begin treatment before E.A.B. is present in significant numbers and to be timely with annual “booster shots”.

If you believe you have Ash trees that are worthy of being protected or if your trees require a “booster”, the time to act is now. The window of opportunity is closing. Last year we cut down and removed more Ash trees than any other species and sadly that will continue for the next few years.

Ash Borer now killing thousands of Ash trees!
I can tell you now that the threat has become reality and Ash trees are failing throughout the Valley. The damage is done by the larvae which burrow underneath the bark and chew the cambium unseen and undetected. Their numbers multiply quickly and within two years the tree dies. Toward the end you will see limbs dying and woodpeckers scrapping the bark off foraging for the worms. All summer we have been removing Ash trees killed by this insect.

If you have an Ash tree that is healthy and important to your landscape it is imperative it be treated before damage goes too far. A single treatment once a year with systemic insecticide approved by the DEC will protect your Ash tree from this menace. Please contact us for a no cost evaluation. 845-255-8741 or mountaintreecare.net

"The tree which moves some to tears of joy is in the eyes of others only a green thing that stands in the way. Some see nature all ridicule and deformity... and some scarce see nature at all. But to the eyes of the man of imagination, nature (the tree) is imagination itself" William Blake 1799
