Smokey Bear would like to thank everyone who attended Smokey Bear Story Time at the New Town City Library yesterday! We had a great time teaching children about defensible space and wildfire prevention while they built their own houses using popsicle sticks.

We would also like to thank the New Town City Library for inviting us and providing the opportunity to share important fire prevention lessons with our community. As Wildfire Awareness Month comes to an end, we encourage everyone to continue practicing fire safety and keeping these prevention tips in mind throughout the summer.

Thank you for helping us create a safer community, and remember: Only you can prevent wildfires! 🔥🐻🌲

🚨 FORT BERTHOLD DROUGHT UPDATE 🚨

The latest U.S. Drought Monitor shows that portions of the Fort Berthold Reservation are now classified as Abnormally Dry (D0). While this is not considered a drought, it is often the first sign that vegetation and soils are beginning to dry out and that wildfire potential may increase.

Currently, approximately one-third of the Reservation is classified as Abnormally Dry (D0). The greatest impacts are occurring in the North, West, and Four Bears Segments, with minor impacts in the Northeast Segment. The East and South Segments remain free of drought conditions at this time.

What does "Abnormally Dry" mean?
• Grasses and other fine fuels can cure more quickly.
• Wildfires may start more easily and spread faster during windy conditions.
• Fire danger indices may increase as drying continues.
• Continued lack of precipitation can lead to worsening drought conditions.

The National Weather Service and NOAA Climate Prediction Center's seasonal outlook indicates that drought development is possible across North Dakota through the summer months, including the Fort Berthold Reservation. However, the outlook does not predict how severe drought conditions may become or whether drought will develop in all areas. It simply indicates that conditions are favorable for increasing dryness over the coming months.

TAT Fire Management encourages residents to remain vigilant and take steps to prevent human-caused wildfires:

🔥 Properly extinguish campfires.
🔥 Avoid parking vehicles in tall grass.
🔥 Use caution when operating equipment that can create sparks.
🔥 Follow all local burn restrictions and fire safety recommendations.
🔥 Report any wildfires immediately by calling 911.

As we move into the summer fire season, TAT Fire Management will continue to monitor drought conditions, fire danger indices, and weather patterns affecting the Fort Berthold Reservation and will provide updates as conditions change.

🚨 TAT FIRE MANAGEMENT – FIRE WEATHER WATCH

A Fire Weather Watch has been issued for Tuesday, May 26, for areas including Four Bears, Mandaree, and western McKenzie County due to strong winds and low relative humidity.

⏰ Timing:
11:00 AM CDT – 10:00 PM CDT

🌬 Expected Conditions:
• Southeast winds 20–30 mph
• Wind gusts up to 40 mph
• Relative humidity as low as 20%
• Hot and dry conditions across the area

🔥 WHAT IS A FIRE WEATHER WATCH?
A Fire Weather Watch means that critical fire weather conditions are possible. Weather conditions are favorable for rapid wildfire growth, but confidence is still developing on exactly how severe conditions may become.

If conditions worsen or become more certain, the Fire Weather Watch could be upgraded to a Red Flag Warning.

🚩 DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A FIRE WEATHER WATCH & RED FLAG WARNING:
• Fire Weather Watch = Be prepared. Dangerous fire weather conditions are possible.
• Red Flag Warning = Take action. Dangerous fire weather conditions are happening or expected very soon.

Under these conditions, any fire that starts can spread rapidly and become difficult to control.

⚠️ FIRE SAFETY REMINDERS:
• Avoid outdoor burning
• Do not park vehicles on dry grass
• Properly dispose of ci******es
• Secure trailer chains to prevent sparks
• Avoid activities that create sparks in dry vegetation

🔥 TAT Fire Management Daily Fire Weather Outlook – May 25, 2026 🔥

Fort Berthold Reservation is currently in MODERATE FIRE DANGER today.

☀️ Mostly sunny skies with temperatures reaching 90–95°F
💨 Light winds around 5–10 mph

A Moderate Fire Danger means fires can still start from accidental sparks or open flames, especially in dry grasses, brush, and roadside areas. While fuels are not critically dry yet, hot temperatures and low humidity can allow fires to spread under the right conditions.

Today’s humidity values are expected to drop around 17–22%, which will continue drying vegetation across the area.

Please use caution with:
🔥 Campfires
🚜 Equipment in tall grass
🚗 Parking vehicles off-road
⛓️ Dragging trailer chains
🚫 Outdoor burning

Warmer and windier conditions are expected to continue through the week, with elevated fire weather concerns possible Tuesday through Thursday.

Help protect our communities, rangelands, and natural resources by practicing fire safety today.
