Have you ever looked at your lawn and spotted what looks like a giant mosquito? 🪲 Don't panic — it's most likely a crane fly, and there's a lot to know about them.

Here are the key facts:

🔍 What are crane flies?
Crane flies (often called "daddy longlegs" in some regions) are large, slender insects belonging to the family Tipulidae. Despite their intimidating size, adult crane flies do not bite humans and are largely harmless.

🌱 Why do they matter to your lawn?
The real concern is underground. Crane fly larvae — known as "leatherjackets" — feed on grass roots, organic matter, and plant stems just below the soil surface. Heavy infestations can lead to brown, patchy lawns, especially during late summer and early fall.

📅 When are they most active?
Adult crane flies are most commonly seen in late summer through early fall. They emerge, mate, and lay eggs in moist soil — often in your lawn or garden beds.

⚠️ Signs of a crane fly problem:
Irregular brown patches in your lawn Increased bird activity (birds feed on the larvae) Spongy or soft soil near affected areas
✅ What can you do?
Proper lawn maintenance — including aeration, appropriate watering, and timely pest treatment — can significantly reduce crane fly larvae populations. If the damage is extensive, professional pest control is the most reliable solution.

At Hollenbeck Pest Control, we are here to help you protect your lawn and home from pest damage before it gets out of hand. Knowledge is the first step — and action is the next.

Summer may be winding down, but wasps certainly are not. 🐝

As we move into late August, many homeowners are caught off guard — assuming that cooler weather means fewer pest problems. The truth is, wasps become more active and aggressive this time of year as they search for food and shelter before fall arrives. That often means your home becomes their next target.

Here are three key warning signs to watch for:

🔍 Soft spots on your walls — This can indicate a nest forming inside your structure.
👂 Noises within wall voids — Buzzing or rustling sounds between walls should never be ignored.
🏠 Activity on your home's exterior — Wasps hovering around eaves, vents, or gaps are a red flag worth investigating right away.

Catching these signs early can save you from a much bigger problem down the line. Our expert techncians know how to identify, locate, and safely address wasp activity before it becomes a serious threat to your home and family.

Don't wait until the problem finds you — be proactive this season.

Yellow jackets found the perfect hiding spot—inside the siding and right around an electrical box. 🐝⚡

These hidden nests can grow quickly and become extremely defensive when disturbed. Our team located the activity, identified the nesting area, and treated it safely and effectively.

See yellow jackets coming and going from your siding? Don’t seal the opening—they may find another way out, including into your home.
