8-Hour Annuals: A Waste of Time or a Game Changer?
Every security guard in NYC has to do it—the 8-hour annual refresher. You show up, sit through a class, sign your name, and walk out with your certification for another year.
But let’s be real: how many of those classes actually teach anything?
Too often, it's the same dull lectures, the same outdated videos, and an instructor who’s just going through the motions. You count the hours, not the lessons. And that’s a problem.
Good Training = Better Guards
I’ve seen the difference between a well-trained guard and one who's just going through the motions. When things go sideways—whether it’s a medical emergency, an aggressive visitor, or something worse—you want the guard who knows exactly what to do, not the one second-guessing themselves.
The right training doesn’t just check a box—it prepares you for real situations:
✔ How to calm down an angry person before things escalate
✔ Spotting trouble before it becomes a problem
✔ What to do when the fire alarm goes off and no one else has a clue
✔ Writing reports that don’t sound like a third grader wrote them
The Right Instructor Makes All the Difference
I’ve been in classes where the instructor might as well have been reading a bedtime story—zero energy, zero real-world examples. And then I’ve had instructors who made the training real, breaking down what actually happens on the job, sharing stories, answering questions, and keeping people engaged. That’s the kind of class where you walk away better than when you walked in.
At Silver Screen Security School, I’ve been around instructors who actually care about making security guards better. Not just for compliance—but for the real world.
So the next time you’re sitting in an 8-hour annual, ask yourself: Is this making me better at my job? If the answer is no, it might be time to find a class that does.
