My new obsession- beneficial nematodes! These microscopic worms live in the soil and eat any pests that try to get to your plant. And when they run out of pests, they just become organic matter for your soil. Just activate them by mixing with water and water your plants with them a few times a year and it keeps all kinds of pests away, naturally, without pesticides, including those always annoying fungus gnats! And when I take care of your plants on a maintenance plan, I always make sure these are part of the plan!

Let's talk about orchids! We look at the different parts of the orchid: leaves, roots, aerial roots, stems and blooms. And also, the universal question- where do I cut the stem when the blooms fall off? Answer: besides being above a healthy node, it's basically your choice!

Bringing new plants into your home? Take these precautions to make sure that the new plant doesn't have any pests that might infect all of your existing plants! And if that does happen, of course, call us! Here's what to do:
1. If you can, quarantine the plant for 30 days and monitor for signs of pests.
2. If that's not possible, and it's a small plant, take it out of the pot, throw away the pot and the soil and then dunk the whole plant in a large bucket with water and dish detergent and lightly scrub it down- roots and all
3. If neither of these is possible, make yourself a concoction spray like I did! Some combination of neem oil, rubbing alcohol, dish detergent, and water. Throw in some generic horticulture spray too if you'd like

Just in time for Christmas- a Christmas Cactus! How to turn a Christmas Cactus like the one on the left into one that looks like the right? Here are some important things to remember:
1. Drainage! They may not look like it but these are cactus and they need well-draining soil and never to be soaking in too much water. Even less water as they get close to blooming!
2. Not necessary but they do appreciate some small sticks for stability
3. Make sure they have complete darkness and coolness overnight for at least 6-8 weeks (put them in a closet overnight if you need to!) Count back 8 weeks from when you would like it to bloom!
