Queen Elizabeth II, Britain's longest reigning monarch, has died at the age of 96. The sad news was confirmed by an offical statement released by the palace, writing that, "Her Majesty The Queen died peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon." Queen Elizabeth is survived by her four children.

It's impossible to overstate the significance of Elizabeth's reign as Queen. Her rule was one defined by what historian Philip Ziegler terms in his biography of her father, George VI, as a "crippling sense of duty" -Elizabeth's ethic, and above all, her willingness to embrace newness and changed earned her a reputation of being Britain's best, if not the greatest monarch to have reigned.
