Yvonne Liao is a designer, entrepreneur and the founder of Yvonne Liao, a luxury footwear company based in New York City. Prior to starting her own footwear line, Yvonne spent a decade working in fashion product development, sales and marketing with some of the biggest brands in the industry. Along the way, she helped a number of designers, fashion bloggers and celebrities launch fashion brands on major home shopping networks, such as project runway designer Nick Verreos and fashion blogger Jessica Sturdy. After spending her life designing and drawing shoes, however, she was frustrated with products that lack personality, creativity and color and began prototyping a collection of flats, sandals, mules, high heels and sneakers. She made her first pair of stilettos in the summer 2019 and launched her first capsule collection in the spring of 2021. Since the launch, her designs have been featured in Vogue Italy (2021) and on a number of prominent social media accounts. A native of Singapore, Yvonne has a Bachelor’s degree from National University of Singapore and an MA in Luxury & Fashion Management from Savannah College of Art & Design (SCAD). She lives in New York City with her husband, 77lb lab mutt Momo, and an enormous closet of shoes.

September has been such a special month for me — full of pinch-me moments, new connections, and reminders of why I started this journey. From seeing my shoes on the NYFW runway to launching my first Fall/Holiday preorder and meeting inspiring people along the way, swipe left to see some of my favorite September highlights. ❤️

My shoes strutted the runway at Style Across the Aisle at The Metropolitan Opera during NYFW — and Councilwoman Kamillah Hanks wore my shoes on the runway! As an independent shoe designer, seeing my designs on such a beautiful stage was a moment I’ll never forget even though I was not able to attend the show in person.

September was also a big business milestone — I launched my very first Fall/Holiday preorder. Putting a new collection out into the world and asking customers to believe in my designs before they were even produced was both exciting and nerve-wracking, but every preorder reminded me to keep believing in this little shoe business of mine.

I was also invited to an exclusive behind-the-scenes preview at The Metropolitan Opera for Macbeth and Lincoln in the Bardo. Getting a glimpse into the incredible artistry, craftsmanship, and creativity that happens behind the curtain was such a special experience for a designer like me.

And then there was this full-circle NYC moment: attending the Mid-Autumn Festival at Gracie Mansion and meeting Mayor Mamdani. From designing shoes in my studio to finding myself in a room celebrating culture, community, and entrepreneurship in New York City — September gave me so many moments to pause and say, wow, look how far this journey has taken me.

Liberty holds so much meaning behind its design. ❤️ And today, on the 6th anniversary of my dad’s passing, it feels especially fitting to finally share the story behind this shoe.

I always thought my dad would be around to see me launch my shoe business. I imagined sharing all those milestones with him in person—my first pop-up at a local boutique, my first TV appearance on The Tamron Hall Show, my first runway debut at the Metropolitan Opera, and seeing my story featured in The Straits Times.

But he never got to see any of it.

Losing him taught me something I wish I had learned sooner: life is short, and there is no time to put off doing what you love.

So much of my journey as a footwear designer has been about taking that leap, believing in myself, and creating something that is truly mine. And every milestone still comes with a little thought of, I wish Dad could see this.

Today, I carry him with me in every step.

To my most amazing dad—thank you for believing in me, loving me, and giving me the courage to follow my dreams. I miss you more than words can say. ❤️

What a surreal and deeply meaningful moment it is as a designer to see my shoes grace the runway at Style Across the Aisle The Metropolitan Opera !

Although I couldn’t attend in person, I’m incredibly grateful to everyone who helped make this moment possible. To the Style Across the Aisle team, thank you for creating such a beautiful platform and supporting local designers.
