I've been thinking about the Hero's Journey lately. I discovered Joseph Campbell in my early days at Discovery, and it shaped how I understood stories. And I realized that the pivots, hard decisions, and feelings of being 'lost' in my own life weren't random, they were part of a journey we're all on.
And it all makes sense. The choices I've made, the scary moments when I said yes, the people who showed up, the breakdowns that became breakthroughs, and how I changed each time.
Today, when that whisper that something needs to change comes, I don't panic anymore. I recognize it. I'm being called to adventure again. What I have also learned is that the call doesn't stop. It's not a one-time thing.
James Hollis puts it beautifully:
"We all have a calling. For some it will be found in our capacity for caring for the needs of the suffering world around us. For others it will be work of the hands. For some it will be work of the mind that opens doors and shatters shackles. For still others, it will be the exploration of the natural world. For some it will be pushing back the boundaries of our limited sense of the possible. But for all of us, there is a large summons."
A large summons. Not a small one. Not a convenient one. Not one that fits neatly into your calendar or your comfort zone. A large one.
I've watched so many brilliant, capable, deeply wise people get stuck. They hear the calling and refuse it, telling themselves it's too late, too risky, too much.
It's never too late.
Whether you're 35 or 65, whether you've just lost a job or you're planning to rewire, whether you're grieving or celebrating, the journey is waiting for you.
Joseph Campbell revealed that myths across cultures share the same journey. Christopher Vogler made that journey practical for storytellers. I'm translating it for the journey that matters most: yours.
The stages of the Hero's Journey are cyclical throughout our lives.
So, what are you being called to do this year? And if you've been hearing that same call for years, the one you keep turning down, postponing, negotiating with. What if this is your year to finally answer?
Maybe it's:
๐ก Starting the business you've been dreaming about
๐ก Leaving the career that no longer fits
๐ก Moving to the place that calls your name
๐ก Writing the book, creating the art, building the thing
๐ก Saying yes to the relationship or no to the one that's been draining you
๐ก Finally, choosing yourself
Whatever it is, I promise you: the journey is worth it. The alternative isn't staying safe in your Ordinary World, it is staying stuck there and wondering 'what if...'.
The hero in this journey is you! What's calling you?
